The innate spell feat from Complete Arcane states that I can choose any spell I can cast and it becomes a spell like ability usable at will, but it says that it permanently takes up a slot eight levels higher. Does this mean that I can only choose 1st level spells since 1+8=9 and 9 is the highest? If so, what would be a good Beguiler spell to make innate? I was thinking disguise self or charm person...

Barring epic levels, only 0th and 1st level spells are eligible for the CAr version of innate spell. I believe that the Players Guide to Faerun has another version that doesn't bump the level of spell slot used but limits the number of times per day the SLA is usable.

Thank you for the clarification

Pre-epic (where you can grab Improved Spell Capacity for all your 10th level + spell slot needs) the highest you can go is a 1st level spell for purposes of Innate Spell.

The Player's Guide version allows you to use it 3/day, I believe, for a slot 4 levels higher. I vastly prefer the CArcane version, myself.

And IIRC, the innate spell feat is not a metamagic feat, so feats that reduce spell slots won't affect it either.:(

Innate shapechange for the win. It's nice if you take improved heighten, and have a reserve feat like fiery burst, to give you infinite fireballs as well. It gets more dice each level you heighten it, and never runs out. Take loremaster starting at level 21, you can get a feat every odd level until the PrC hits level 10.

21) Improved Heighten
21) ISP - 10th
23) ISP - 11th
24) ISP - 12th
25) ISP - 13th
27) ISP - 14th
27) ISP - 15th
29) ISP - 16th
30) ISP - 17th
32) Innate Spell - Shapechange

Then take a couple instances of improved metamagic, and the feat to add 10 dice to spell damage caps to really stack up the boomer damage, for those situations where you are willing to part with a spell in memory.

Once you get up to level 17, you can make any spell innate for 2 feats, one to add the slot, and one to make it innate. There's a 9th level spell that lets you cast inside an antimagic shell that's great, especially if you make AMS a permanent emanation. Innate greater teleport has its uses. Greater dispel magic, the spell to lower spell resistance, true strike if you ever actually use a weapon, and plenty of other cool stuff.

Innate spells become spell-like abilities, so quicken SLA is a good idea. Spells you typically use a lot of meta feats are probably not good candidates for becoming innate. Instead, focus on spells with unique complete abilities that you'd love to use as often as you could.

FRCS also has signature spell, where you can convert a spell slot to another spell.

fireball's 10 dice cap is a function of the spell itself. heighten spell does not increase the damage cap, just the save dc.

my favorite character is a cheeseforged that has heal with a 60 ft. range, and disintegrate, both as innate spells, at level 27.

Concerning Players-Guide-To-Faerun-Version of Innate Spell, how does it do compared with the Archmage's High Arcana Spelllike Ability?

Innate Spell needs two feats as prerequs (Silent and Still Spell) and you have to loose ONE spellslot to gain THREE uses per day.

The Archmage's high arcane needs TWO spellslots for TWO uses per day.

If you can afford the feats, Innate Spell seems superior to High Arcana Spellike Ability, or am I missing something?

Core vs. non-core?

Right, I had not thought about this, but beside of that, would you agree that Innate Spell is (mostly) superior to HA SL?

The 3.5 archmage is generally pretty suboptimal.

Back in 3.0 days, the class ruled. Now it hardily seems worth the investment of feats and spell slots.

By the way, there's an ur-priest in a campaign I'm running who took Innate Spell to get three uses a day of miracle. As far as I can tell, he likes it.
