Has anyone else ever thought about how HORRIBLE the intimidate skill is!?! I mean, it doesn't ever help me!

Well, maybe I should clarify a bit. In one campaign, I play a level two warlock. A 17 charisma combined with 5 ranks in intimidate plus the beguiling influence invocation can give you a pretty good bonus to intimidate. So, we're (we being the warlock, a dwarven fighter who deals an average of 17 damage per hit and often cuts people in half, and and a human cleric of St. Cuthbert who deals good amounts of damage with his mace) fighting a fighter dude (part of this weird gang) with his minions. One of tghe minions starts to run away. My warlock uses a nifty maneuver I made up (but has probably been used before) where he shoots out a big purpley explosion (yes I know it called an eldritch blast, but big purpley explosion is funner to say) at people and tells him to stop running or the dwarf rips their limbs off, and that he'll be allowed to live if he stays. The guy runs faster! Explanation?

The skill is just as important as your DM makes it.

If your DM doesn't run the skill correctly or runs NPCs strangely, discuss it with your DM.

So...you did something scary and are complaining that the recipient of said scaryness ran away?

I'm failing to see the problem here.

I guess I'm confused as to exactly what your story has to do with intimidate. You never USED the intimidate skill for anything.

If you're trying to use the intimidate skill to change someone's attitude, it takes one minute. Not something you're likely to do in combat. If you're using it to demoralize, it takes a standard action, which means you can't use your 'big purpley explosion' in the same round.

So what's the problem?

well i assume he was far away from you (or at least out of your reach), and it does say in the PH that you need to threaten the person you're trying to intimidate in melee combat. Now i think that there should be certain exceptions to that rule based on the situation and the DM. Also think about what if the minion rolled higher than you? Perhaps he was intimidated and figured the safest way was away from you. Unless you talked about it with your DM there too many possibilities to get mad about it.

THIS is how you quote.

Also, I see where you're going, but how can spell a word that doesn't exist wrong?

Also, I see where you're goiong, but how can spell a word that doesn't exist wrong?A word that doesn't exist is by definition spelled incorrectly, because it's not spelled correctly.

And I agree, the irony of this person having atrocious spelling and grammar is amusing.

Okay, but maybe I spelled the incorrect word correctly from an incorrect point of view.

Oh, and the signature thing? Well, have you ever see someone put an aspiration in the bio in the back of there book?

If, of course, gamers even read anything beyond the books about their games...:)

Intimidate is nice if you can do it from a distance and combine it with other fear effects. Stack things like Fear, Scare, and intimidate (they stack! Really!).

Heh, I already responded to your original post. Nothing more to say really, unless you have more info.

You never used the skill, and then you complain that it's useless.

It may have had something to do with the big purpley magical explosives.

You never used the skill. Look at my previous post. It takes time to use the skill; you never actually spent that time. It looks like you're expecting the skill to do something for nothing.

No im not trying to give you a hard time. Intimidate is a good skill depending on how often your DM gives you the chance to use it. And im pretty sure you can make an intimidation check in a fight and like demoralize your opponents or something like that... I don't have my book with me so Im not 100% sure so....

Looking at the issue again, this isn't even a case where your Intimidate skill comes into play.

Intimidate makes people afraid of you. These people are already afraid of you. The skill's work is done.
