You can take Martial Discipline for a single maneuver.

And often prestige classes can fit the bill. If nothing else, master of nine gives you access to all the disciplines. Or you could just take a class in one of the other two base classes (actually, that can get a bit cheesy - A Warblade 18 that takes a level of Swordsage gets 6 maneuvers, up to 5th level (assuming prereqs can be met).

There's a bit of confusion of on that.

The ToB says that every other martial class advances your initiator level by 1/2. So 18 levels warblade nets you an initiator level of 9 for the swordsage you're grabbing.

But I recall reading on these forums that the first level you take in a maneuver class forces you to take lvl 1 maneuvers before anything else.

Stances and maneuvers are listed as separate class features in all three Tome of Battle base classes. The stance descriptions all begin with "You begin play with knowledge of one 1st-level stance..." The maneuvers section lists no such restriction on the level of maneuvers you can select at the start.

Also, drelb, could you name your threads more descriptively? I mean, seriously.

True.

Note also that maneuvers can have a prerequisite of knowledge of other maneuvers from the same discipline; thus to gain many high-level maneuvers, one needs to already have maneuvers without such prerequisites - i.e. lower level maneuvers.
