Thus, we brewed up this feat that didn't step on more than a few Monk toes... TrainedKi Strike: Prequisite: Improved Unarmed Strike, Stunning Fist, BAB +7, Wis 13, must study under a Monk or Martial Adept for one month. Benefit: Your Unarmed attacks count as a +1 weapon for overcoming damage reduction, and for no other purpose. For every bonus point of wisdom, your unarmed attacks count as a +1 higher weapon. Thus if a Druid with Wis 15 had this feat, her unarmed attacks would count as +2 weapons for overcoming damage reductions and nothing else, but would not gain the benefits of this feat when in Wildshape or Wildform or under the effect of a Polymorph or similar spell. This feat does not translate into actual enhancement bonus to attack and damage, as it is only a 'virtual' enhancement. This is a Supernatural effect. Normal: Only Monks have Ki strike. The feat doesn't suddenly make a Monk look like crap. It's a feat for dedicated 'fist' fighters, and doesn't make their unarmed attacks suddenly crap all over everything. Many things have damage resistance to magical weapons, and thus their unarmed strikes will overcome those DR, but many more beasties have DR +2 and Cold Iron/10 or worse... At higher levels the PC in question would be better served getting Magic Fang or it's Greater cousin slapped on their fists/feet or getting their hands of a Amulet of Natural Weapons if they multi-class into the Monk class or Monk-esqu PrC, but in a pinch it's a handy low-level equalizer. |

I would just let it do DR +1, not allow a higher wisdom to boost it above that. Maybe another feat to boost it that way. If playing in a 3.5 game I would not allow DR Lawfull or DR Adamantine to be gained by just one feat. 3. With that minor change, I consider this feat to be fair. While usually class skills are stronger than what is allowed for a feat, this has several things going for it. It has higher pre-reqs then the class skill (i.e. if you take the Monk class, you get it a lot quicker) It is a defense cancellation, not an attack/defense item itself. So it will be rarely used, and then not do more than remove a low end advantage. Without the Wisdom boosting effect, it effectively just lets the player keep track with other PC's that don't use unarmed strikes. |
