| Obsidianjaerc08-07-07, 01:20 AM | This is phase one of my editing of my feats. I will now present my feats in alphabetical order, as a .pdf document hosted from my own site. In the near future I will also have a a copy of that list in forums form in this post. I will still be updating this thread with new feats, and of course the comments will be left intact, but as of now all of the current feats have been edited out. Finally I am asking for help with editing, for both grammar and balance on this document. If you are interested contact me either via PM or on this thread. JAERC’S FEATS (http://www.dotradical.net/jaerc/Jaerc's%20Feats%20Handout%20(8%20October ).pdf) |
| Obsidianjaerc08-07-07, 01:35 AM | I've done a lot of revisions as well as add several feats to my bounty. All ready to edit, I discovered I had let the old thread fall. So that's why, this looks familiar, for those who were wondering. I intend to post at least 1 feat/day to keep me creativly lubricated. |
| Thanqol08-07-07, 03:40 AM | Roleplaying and mechanics should be separated. You've got some which are good, which are just the *training and ability to do new stuff*, and some which are terrible and encourage flimsy justification of character backstory in order to get obscene bonuses. Don't try to mix personalities and feat options. Really. Now go to sleep. |
| jaelis08-07-07, 07:26 AM | I'd hate to see a fighter with Brutal Opportunist, Robilar's Gambit and Overpowering Attack. |
| Witch08-07-07, 07:30 AM | Roleplaying and mechanics should be separated. This is where we disagree. And I suspect Jaerc does as well. some which are terrible and encourage flimsy justification of character backstory in order to get obscene bonuses. Although, correct, this one is problematic. Mechanical balance should still be present - could you point out the feats you think are problematic? Jaerc - I've not read them all yet, but for the feats Comely and Supernatural Beauty, I think that your prerequisites are unelegant, and that they offer too many bonuses when compared to other, similar skills such as Skill Focus. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-07-07, 10:23 PM | Jaelis: Although it's nasty, I feel that it's not an overpowered combination, especially in comparison with some of the RG loops. Thanqol: Witch is right, as I spoke about with you on IM. "Fluff" and "Crunch" should be intertwined where and whenever possible. That said I'm going to go burn A Burden of Freedom. I can't fathom what I must have been thinking. As for A Heart Beaten Golden, I still maintain that it's balanced as an Exalted feat. I can see the case for making it a Special Quality, given to some monsters. But if the idea is to be preserved it is to remain a character option rather than an SQ or some arbitrary DM fiat. Witch: I have learned thanks to you and Google that unelegant is a synonym for inelegant. How dumb. In any case I'd like to hear more about what makes them that way. Do you feel that a flat 18 and 22 would be more appropriate? I feel that the higher prerequsite and the status of the beginning of the chain as a does make them more valuable than the comparable Skill Focus (any). In the interest of listening to critique though, he's a potential revision. [b]COMELY You are absolutely, undeniably beautiful. [b]Prerequisites Cha 18 Benefit You gain a +1 on Bluff, Diplomacy, and Gather Information checks with creatures of your own type. This increases to a +2 against those that would be sexually attracted to you. SpecialThis feat may only be selected at 1st level. SUPERNATURAL BEAUTY Your beauty is like otherworldly radiance. Prerequisites Cha 22, Comely Benefit You gain an additional +1 on Bluff, Diplomacy, and Gather Information checks with creatures of your own type. And an additional +1 against those that would be sexually attracted to you. Also, I believe you'll find I have adopted the language you used for your revisions of Natural Spell and Infinite Deflection. My wording, as always, was imprecise for my reduxs and I opted to include yours. You never replied negatively on IM regarding this, so I'm assuming it's okay? |
| Obsidianjaerc08-07-07, 11:04 PM | Previously home to Smite and Unhinged feats. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-09-07, 02:48 AM | Previously the home of Zen Avoidance. |
| SilentOne08-09-07, 03:05 AM | PANTHEON OF THE WILD [Epic] Prerequisites Str 25, Dex 25, Con 25, Int 25, Wis 25, Cha 205 Benefit For five rounds a day all allies within 20 ft. can act as if under the simultaneous effects of bull's strength, cat's grace, bear's endurance, fox's cunning, owl's wisdom and eagle's splendor. These rounds need not be consecutive and to activate or deactivate this ability is a free action. Just flipping through the feats, and I noticed this extraordinary score requirement. I assume you meant 25, just pointing this out so you can fix it. Other than that, looks very nice and varied. Excellent job. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-09-07, 03:19 AM | Thanks for the catch and the kind words. |
| Ace_of_Night08-09-07, 03:24 AM | I've seen some feats like "Beacon" or "Darkness, my old friend" that make the DC for yourself higher when you gain levels (well Darkness, my old friend has a higher DC if you use greater darkness instead of darkness, for instance) Doesn't seem logical to me to have less chance of success when you grow stronger. Same for Burden of Freedom, if you have higher Wisdom the only part that improves is the negative one. Edit: Forgot to say that you have a mighty fine list of feats there other than what I said just now. :P |
| Obsidianjaerc08-09-07, 04:07 AM | From an in-game perspective it might not make a lot of sense. But perhaps one can foist a classic man vs self "the better I become, the harder I must try" archetype to explain this. Or simply examine it from an out of game perspective. On that note. Considering that suppressing your Beacon at 10th level has worse odds that a game of Russian roulette, even for a reasonably optimized character, I will consider and likely tone it down to 10+1/2HD. As for Darkness, My Old Friend: Most PCs can easily, consistently make the check when they are engaged in an encounter or activity appropriate for their CR. Note: Burden of Freedom was flawed in some many ways, including the one you mention, that I axed it. It remains there only for archival purposes. Also, I'm glad you enjoyed the majority of my :ton: of feats. |

| Sigfried Trent08-13-07, 05:36 PM | Hey Jaerc! We'd love to review and publish your feats at the Netbook of Feats if you are interested. We are always looking for more submissions and ideas for the netbook. It can be a bit of a slow process but we'll read each one with care and if we publish them they will get a wide audience. You can find our submission guidelines at www.datadeco.com/nbofeats |
| Obsidianjaerc08-13-07, 10:33 PM | I replied via PM. Once upon a time this was the land of augment and lunging feats. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-16-07, 02:32 AM | There was a lame joke about 4e here once. :emp: |

| Obsidianjaerc09-18-07, 07:36 PM | Once the home of a bardic feat. |
| sevenslayer09-18-07, 08:35 PM | Jaerc you should be writing for WOTC! Some of your feats are so good they just make me want to print of a character sheet and build a character around them! :D Why haven't I seen you anywhere else on the fourms? Oh and by the way, in the Beaming Ray one, mark it as metamagic ;) |
| Obsidianjaerc09-18-07, 08:44 PM | Thank you. Please feel free to use them. I can be found around the Classes and Races boards while popping in on the Rec Room and the Char Ops from time to time. | strenoth11-06-07, 08:39 PM | ARCANE TRAINING [Background] [General] You have received training in the art of arcane magic. Benefit You may choose learn three levels worth of arcane spells from sorcery/wizard, or wu jen spell list. You may cast these spells as a mage of your character level. It is possible that you may know spells that you cannot cast, since you can only cast spells of a level that a sorcerer of your level could cast. You may cast each spell once per day. In that case chose six levels worth of spells rather than three. You may take this feat more than once, selecting the three new levels worth of spells each time. How many times per day? Same with Pious Soul and wild soul Brutal opponent has the potential to be REALLY nasty in the right hands (Or in one case I'm thinking about, unarmed attacks + natural weapons...) for beacon, "no natural SR" means no racial SR? Just to clarify for people who get it as a feature of their class. Eviserate... I like it. *adds to list of reccomended feats for a friend's awakened Dire Ape* extra opportunistic.. um, well, for low-dex characters, many times better than combat reflexes.. for high dex characters, the same or worse... hrrm. Foe Strike: might I point you at Improved favored Enemy from Complete Scoundrel? if I'm remembering the right feat.. oen of them already gives that ability. Book currently being loaned out. Indomitable grappler... *adds that one too* Standardized spell: um, so you take a feat to make spells worse? Your feat does less than average damage for an unmodified spell. At least make it average, rounded up, if you have to spend a feat on it. Example, fireball, 10th+ level caster Your feat: 30 damage ( 60/2 ) Average damage: 35.5 ( (60 +10)/2 ) My proposal: 36 dash series of feats: stacking or replacements? |
| Obsidianjaerc11-06-07, 10:19 PM | As found within the text of those feats "you may cast each spell once per day". Do you think that Brutal Opportunist is too much? Beacon is currently under revision and that particular pre-req is going away, rendering the question irrelevant. I'm glad Eviscerate is appreciated. So with Extra Opportunistic you're saying that for some characters it is good and for some it is not depending on the circumstances? Isn't that just what an ability should be? ;) Foe Strike predates Complete Scoundrel. Standardized Spell simply allows you to be guaranteed a certain amount of damage, no matter what. I will take your suggestion under advisement though, it may need a change. Dash feats stack. Is the text unclear? |
| strenoth11-06-07, 10:59 PM | the dash feats sounded like they would, but most such feats (like spell penetration/greater spell penetration) state as much. :) read the spell-granting feats to quickly i guess... Brutal Opportunist is another feat that's really powerful in the right hands, but then, I'm letting soem oen play an awakened direape with IUS and SUS in my game int he first place... but wouldn't that just be a brutal suprise for soem mage, if a dragon happened to have that feat? pretty much it's a feat that's a little bit nastier when you ahve some one who has a lot of attacks. |
| Amadan11-08-07, 03:14 PM | TALENTED [General] You have a natural knack for certain skills [b]Benefit Choose two thematically linked skills. You must approve any the gaining of this feat with the DM. You gain a +3 bonus on all checks with those two skills and add them to class list(s) henceforth. See examples of Talented in the table below. Unlike most people, apparently, I like the +2/+2 feats as printed. With what you have above, what changes did you make to Skill Focus? Because what you have is worth three feats. |
| Obsidianjaerc11-09-07, 01:14 AM | Skill Focus is unchanged and stacks with Talented. |
| Obsidianjaerc11-09-07, 08:03 PM | SKILL MASTERY You almost never fail when working with your chosen skill. Prerequisites Skill Focus (chosen skill), level 6+ Benefit Choose one skill. Once per round you may reroll a chosen skill role you have just made, but must accept the result even if it is worse. Additionally, you may now take 10 with your chosen skill even when distracted or threatened. PERFECT SKILL MASTERY You never fail when working with your chosen skill. Prerequisites Skill Focus (chosen skill), Skill Mastery (chosen skill) Benefit With your chosen skill you may now take 20 with your even when distracted or threatened. Furthermore this only take five times as long as normal, rather than twenty. CYNOSURE MEDITATION Your understanding of the deeper levels of meditation allows you to tightly control your psionic focus. Prerequisites Wis 13, Concentration 4 ranks Benefit To gain the benefit of this feat you must engage in at least ten minutes of uninterrupted meditation. Once after your meditation, when you expend you psionic focus, you instantly regain it. For the purposes of abilites that require to to retain your psionic focus, it is as if, it never was expended. |
| Obsidianjaerc11-10-07, 01:59 AM | Two updates in one day. Sue me. COLD DEVOTION [Domain] Your faith can summon forth powerful guardians. Benefit Once per day as a standard action, when you are within 30 ft of at least 2 lbs of snow, you may summon forth an ice paramental. The creature remains and follows your commands for 1 minute. The size of the paramental is based on your character level, as given in the table below Level Ice Paramental 1-5 Small 6-10 Medium 11-16 Large 16-20 Huge Special You can select this feat multiple times, gaining one more daily use each time you take it. Additionally, if you have the ability to turn or rebuke undead you gain one additional daily use of this feat for each three turn or rebuke uses you expend. COMPETITION DEVOTION [Domain] You are rarely bested in direct competition. Benefit Once per day you may as a swift action activate the granted ability. Choose one opponent, on your next opposed roll against that opponent you get a bonus based on their HD. Level Bonus 10+ higher +2 5+ higher +3 1+ higher +4 Equal +5 -1 lower +4 -5 lower +3 -10+ lower +2 Special You can select this feat multiple times, gaining one more daily use each time you take it. Class features do not generate bonuses, nor do followers, summoned creatures, or creatures with and Intelligence less than 3. This effect lasts for 1 minute. Special You can select this feat multiple times, gaining one more daily use each time you take it. Additionally, if you have the ability to turn or rebuke undead you gain one additional daily use of this feat for each three turn or rebuke uses you expend. WARRIORS GRACE You are not bound by the weights of the world. Prerequisites BAB +12, Dex 19, Str 19 [need new ones] Benefit You can wear armor that is one step higher, without sacrificing the use of class abilities, than normal. Furthermore you do not take penalties for being moderately encumbered. |
| strenoth11-10-07, 03:37 AM | hmmm, for warriors grace, perhaps specify that you must be able to initially use the class feature(s) with at least light armor? otherwise monks coudl go from "no armor" to "light armor". Unless of course you want them to be able too. |
| Obsidianjaerc11-10-07, 12:15 PM | Warrior's Grace does need to be rewritten a little. But not for the reason you brought up; I do intend monks to be able to wear light armour and still benefit from this feat. I just don't buy either the physical or mystical flavour associated with them being unarmoured. "Oh sweet mercy, I put on a chain shirt and I'm, I'm so slow and weak and can't tumble." = dumb. "Oh noes there is leather touching my skin, my ki (or prana or what have you) can't flow. Nooooo!" = dumb. |
| Obsidianjaerc11-11-07, 08:45 PM | HEARTLESS RAGE [Rage] Your anger is all that matters and you can detach yourself world when you give into it. Prerequisites Wis 17, Indomitable will class feature, Rage or similar class feature 3/day, Candid Rage Benefit When you range you may, as an swift action, expend another daily use of rage. If you do so you become immune to all mind-affecting spells and effects and all enchantments for the duration of your rage. Additionally you become immune to being demoralized by Intimidate and gain a +8 bonus of Will saves and level check against fear, during your heartless rage. CANDID RAGE [Rage] Bold faced scoundrels cannot trick your wild soul. Prerequisites Wis 15, Rage or similar class feature 4/day Benefit When you range you may, as an swift action, expend another daily use of rage. If you do so you gain a +8 bonus on Will saves against Illusion effects and Sense Motive checks against feinting foes. |
| Obsidianjaerc11-22-07, 07:37 PM | MASTER CRAFTER You ply your trade with excellence and speed. Prerequisites Craft (chosen skill) 8 ranks Benefit With your chosen skill you may create objects that fall under that skill in 1/2 of the normal time. |
| Obsidianjaerc12-29-07, 06:22 AM | Major updates to the the pdf. (http://www.dotradical.net/jaerc/Jaerc's%20Feats%20Handout%20(29%20Decemb er).pdf) This means lots more feats, and some corrections to older ones. I'm still looking for help with a variety of tasks. If your interested and qualified, please let me know. |
| Obsidianjaerc01-10-08, 07:53 PM | ABRUPT JUMP [FIGHTER] You can leap at a moments notice. Prerequisites Jump 9 ranks, BAB +11 Benefit Once per encounter, while unencumbered and wearing light armour you can substitute a jump check for your free five-foot step. SPARRING BLOW [FIGHTER] You can pull your strike back, for mercy or for torture. Prerequisite BAB +6, Int 13 Benefit Before you roll your weapon damage you may set a maximum amount of damage that you will deal. If the roll results in less damage then you set, you deal that lesser amount instead. If you deal more damage than you set, you instead do the set amount.
