| Echoes of Deception07-24-07, 08:14 PM | I built this unnamed monk/erudite character whose only especially useful function is jumping. His jumping ability lets him move upwards of 230ish feet from a standing position, and I would really like to take something similar to the Flyby Attack feat, since he can move so far by jumping. Please understand and do not dismiss me by the epic-seeming number; he's not epic. He is, in fact, level 7. But what I want to know if, are there any options for me? |
| JadeSpider964307-24-07, 10:19 PM | by the book....no. flyby attack requires a fly speed, jumping does not give you a flyspeed so it doesn't qualify. from the flavor viewpoint, the problem is that flying implies at least a limited amount of aerial control and manueverabiltiy. jumping is simply a directed thrust. once you initiate the jump, you're pretty much stuck on the path you set yourself on, you can't change direction mid-jump without some sort of assistance. you're probably looking more for either spring attack, or something along the lines of the skill tricks like Walk the Walls or Wall Jumper. |
| locustechpriest07-24-07, 10:24 PM | I thought up a level 6 halfling psionic warrior who could jump 10ft vertically... you outdid me. It seems like you need spring attack. You don't actually fly, so I wouldn't do flyby. How did you make such a being, by the way? |

Please understand and do not dismiss me by the epic-seeming number; he's not epic. He is, in fact, level 7. But what I want to know if, are there any options for me? Without looking at the exact wordings, I believe that Spring Attack covers jumping as part of normal movement, and nowhere does it require that you stop to attack. Again, not sure about that, and I'm too tired to look it up right now, but it sounds right to me. More importantly, how the hell did you make such an abomination of a jumper? |
| Amaril07-25-07, 08:41 AM | Spring attack would indeed be the correct option. Jumping is part of your movement, and thus can be used for such a tactic. Note: you cannot jump further than your speed in a single round. If you begin a jump and do not land during that round, you finish the jump in the succeeding round(s). |
| Novacat07-25-07, 07:48 PM | Still waiting on an explanation of this supposed 230-feet-from-standing jumping power. |
| Bantam07-27-07, 03:47 PM | Yea, I'm interested in how this is done too (with pen and paper ready). Best I've ever done with a human character is like around +50-70 with OA's Blade Dancer. |
| tarkin07-27-07, 04:21 PM | As a practical matter, I would never allow anyone to count as flying, no matter how good their jump was. Even the worst qualitier Flier has the ability to turn in mid air, jumping does not. I am also interested in seeing how you got 200+ jump distance. Keep in mind that many of the doubling things do not stack. The best I got is Centaur (50), Barbarian 1: +10 (60), Monk 6:+20 (80) wearing Horseshoes of Speed: +30 (110). That requires an alignment change, they lose Rage, and can never gain any levels in Barbarian. Oh, and they take an XP penalty because of different classes. As a practical manner, I would not take Barbarian, and just stick with Centaur Monk, wearking Horse shoes of Speed for 100 speed. Expeditious Retreat will not stack with the Horseshoes, but a potion of Jump (+10 to Jump check) will. That grants you +38 total to your jump skill, than max out ranks for 10 =48 No where close to making your 200+ jump. |
| Echoes of Deception07-27-07, 04:42 PM | Well, I haven't got a problem with stretching the jump out over several rounds, as would be necessary. Sadly, the sketch of this character was an experiment, so we don't have the sketch around anymore. I could certainly rebuild it, given enough free time. It may not work at all, with the change in exact editions, so please stop me if I missed something. But the basics are here. The character needs to be human with high strength, dexterity and intelligence scores and maxed jump and tumble skills. He needs to have three levels in monk and four levels in erudite, and needs to have purchased mental leap as many times as his power point reserve allows, as well as that feat that lets a character make a standing jump as if it were a running one. I can't remember the name right now. A ring of jumping, a belt of ultimate athleticism and boots of striding and springing and a psionic shard of jump should allow him to make unusually long jumps. I apologize if I've got it wrong, I just thought it would be fun to make something can does nothing but jump far. |
| Cormroc07-27-07, 05:55 PM | The Boots of Striding and Springing, Ring of Jumping, and Shard of Jumping don't stack. They are all competence bonuses. You could get +10 from the ring and that is it, the movement bonus from the boots doesn't even stack with the monk's movement bonus to give you another +4, both are enhancement. I don't know about the Belt of Ultimate Athleticism, I only have the core books and access to the SRD. As a feat Mental Leap can only be taken once, and even if you could take it more than once you can only have one psionic focus to expend to get the +10. |
| Novacat07-27-07, 07:06 PM | I ran the numbers and came up with +40 Jump (without counting strength). No multiplication. BTW, a Thri'kreen of the same ECL with 3 levels of Monk, the Mental Leap and Run feats, Boots of Striding and Springing, and an Improved Ring of Jumping would have a jump check as follows: +30 (racial) +7 (ranks) +10 (Ring) +12 (speed: 40 base, +10 monk, +10 boots) +10 (Mental Leap feat) +4 (Run feat) Total: +73 without Strength. |
| Cormroc07-28-07, 03:56 AM | The boot's speed bonus and the Monk's speed bonus are both enhancement bonuses leaving you at +8 for speed and +69 total. |
| Novacat07-28-07, 07:54 AM | The boot's speed bonus and the Monk's speed bonus are both enhancement bonuses leaving you at +8 for speed and +69 total. You are correct. I didn't catch that. I could'a swore it was just an increase to the base speed. |
| Howie2307-28-07, 02:18 PM | The boot's speed bonus and the Monk's speed bonus are both enhancement bonuses leaving you at +8 for speed and +69 total. Potion of jump, CL9, gives you +30. Prolly won't stack w/everything, though. |
| Novacat07-28-07, 07:17 PM | Potion of jump, CL9, gives you +30. Prolly won't stack w/everything, though. 1. It's an enhancement bonus, so it won't stack with the Ring of Jumping. 2. A potion is expended after one use. We're looking at ways to do this jump anytime. |
| Cormroc07-29-07, 01:11 AM | It will stack with everything, Ring of Jumping is a Competence Bonus |
| InkBlot07-29-07, 11:11 AM | The might spring power from Complete Psionics could help. First level power, swift action, +10 enhancement to jump, +5 per two extra power points. As a 4th level Erudite, he would only be able to spend 4 power points on it, which is only enough to get +15 to jump. He would also have to use the Expanded Knowledge feat to learn the power, since it is not on the psion/wilder or discipline lists. If he has Practiced Manifester, then he can spend 7 power points on mighty spring, which grants a +25 enhancement bonus to jump. He ... needs to have purchased mental leap as many times as his power point reserve allows No. Mental leap is a feat. You don't buy feats with power points. Mental leap is not fueled by power points. You can only ever take a feat once, unless the feat specifically states otherwise. Mental leap requires you to expend your psionic focus. Psionic focus is not fueled by power points. You can only ever expend your psionic focus for one thing at a time. Expending psionic focus is not an action, it is part of another action (such as jumping). You can only spend a number of power points equal to your manifester level. that feat that lets a character make a standing jump as if it were a running one. Leap Of The Heavens, Player's Handbook II Edit: "No fly. Jump good." |
| Echoes of Deception08-01-07, 02:37 PM | Ah... I apologize. I am using books older than the very current edition. Sorry to have bothered you all. What I meant by "as many times as his power point reserve allows" though, was that in the book I'm looking at, buying that feat multiple times requires higher minimums on one's power point reserve. That is what I was referring to. It's a shame I cannot jump further. Sad. Does the belt of ultimate athletiscism still allow one to take 20 on a jump check, once per day? |
| locustechpriest08-04-07, 08:00 AM | Note: you cannot jump further than your speed in a single round. That's a wonderful rule... until you think about gravity. Of course, once you start thinking about real physics, DnD jumping only gets more fatal the farther you jump... Ah, well, you can still go with Ring of Telekinesis and Ring of Feather Fall (violent thrust yourself straight up every round...). I don't know the numbers on that (spell declines from telling), it really depends on how hard the spell throws you... if your DM allows it to throw a person (against which there is no logical argument, I think). If you long jump and have a back wind, this makes for good overland traveling! Cheers! |
