So the guy's falling...and falling...and falling, for about 100 ft total. When he hits, he takes enough damage to reduce his HP to 7 from 50, barely maintaining consciousness with five subdual. Now, I know this is a fantasy game and characters can survive 1000 ft plummets with the right spells or enough HP, but shouldn't something more happen than him hitting the ground, going, "OW!" and walking away like he didn't just fall 100 ft?

Go read this web site/posting (http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/1071076/posts)

The truth is that people routinely fall from rather large distances and survive with minimal if any complications. Also, after you have fallen 300 ft or so, you reach terminal velocity. I.E. You take nor more damage fromfalling 30,000 ft than you do from falling 301 ft.

The d20 falling rules are about as realistic as the rest of the d20 rules are.

You're playing a hero. Heroes can jump off of mountains and survive, they can walk through fires and survive. They can wrestle dragons and win. Does this not strike you as something that's supposed to happen?

It's not supposed to be realistic. You're not supposed to break your neck and die horribly falling 10,000ft onto solid concrete. You're supposed to survive, because you're heroic, and that's what heroes do.

Besides which, it's incredibly funny to have someone fall in D&D out of an airship, land prone, survive, and shout out: "Medic!" :P

This is when a DM most make improvised rulings.

He got lucky, if you had rolled 7 more hit points of damage he would have had to make a save vs massive damage DC 15 fortitude save or die from it in the rules any time you take over 50 hit points damage from any source.

"This is high fantasy" as one of my friends likes to say. There's campaign & rules for making it more bloody/realistic if you want to. Unearthed Arcana (SRD) I believe has some & The Black Company Campaign Setting(non-WOTC campaign) has a very dangerous system where you can be knocked dying much easier by a massive hit.
