My friend and I are wondering about how the mechanics of this ability and feat interact together? Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated because we have a few players that have a taste for bending rules.

We think that the improved smiting would only come into effect when using Smite Evil, regardless of Justice Blade.

Thanks everyone! :)

Edit: The alignment chosen when the improved smiting feat was chosen when the character is advancing as a gray guard and was for Smite Evil.

They interact in the exact way the abilities specify.

If you attempt a Smite Evil, you gain the abilities specified by Improved Smiting.

If you attempt a Smite Chaos, you gain the abilities specified by Improved Smiting.

If you attempt a Smite Good, you gain the abilities specified by Improved Smiting.

Rinse and repeat.

We think that the improved smiting would only come into effect when using Smite Evil, regardless of Justice Blade.

And you have no basis for this belief.

Justice Blade doesn't change the fact that it is a Smite attack, rather it only changes the alignment that is being smitten and the corresponding bonuses gained from Improved Smiting.

In fact, Improved Smiting is specifically worded so that it may work with Smite alignment abilities other than Smite Evil.

PS: For those wondering... Justice Blade is a class ability of the Gray Guard prestige class (Complete Scoundrel) and Improved Smiting is a feat from the Complete Divine.

It is just the part of Improved Smiting that addresses smite abilities that do not have an alignment that confuses us. Technically, the feat is for smite evil when you select it (as a gray guard btw), but as you level up, the ability basically counts towards the no alignment association.

The Gray Guard's Smite will always have an alignment.

When you choose the feat, you will never touch the no alignment section.

Even if he uses a Smite other than Smite Evil, the Smite will still have an alignment.

Thanks for the help. I have no cookies to offer since I can't cook, but how about a plant? :pumpkin:
