So has anyone gotten the kiai shout feat? I got it for my marshal character as we're doing Red Hand of Doom. Idea is to lower the saving throws of large numbers of baddies before the spellcasters hit them.

My one reservation with the feat is that you can use it only three times per day. Does anyone else feel this is too limiting? I was thinking something like once per day for every two character levels, or two times per encounter, or once per day plus charisma modifier, or some such thing.

Let me know if any of you have any ideas ere I approach my Dm.

3x/day should be plenty. How many encounters a day do you have?

When you hit someone with a kiai shout, they go to shaken. If you can make them shaken again, they go to frightened, at which point they run away.

*Snort!* The only thing Kiai Shout is good for is that it's a prerequisite feat for Greater Kiai Shout (and possibly for a couple of Oriental Adventurers PrCs). If all you want out of the feat is what the feat itself can do, then I recommend you look at Daunting Presence in the Miniatures Handbook. It does literally everything that Kiai Shout does (except be a prerequisite to other stuff).

If you're looking for something better that Kaiai Shout and don't mind being a munchkin then take Frightful Presence from page 106 of the Draconomicon. It is a [General] feat with a prerequisite of Cha 15 and 9 ranks in the Intimidate skill. You gain a frightful presence ability which can render shaken for several rounds (at least 3) opponents with fewer HD than you who are also within 30 feet. There are no daily use limitations.

I had a character with the feat and have since decided that it was too powerful and too troublesome to use. Every time I attacked an enemy I'd have to check their HD and then the DM would have to make saving throw after saving throw for them while I noted which ones were shaken and which weren't.

I'd also like to bring your attention to Draconic Aura from page 16 of Dragon Magic. Any 3rd level character can take it and you gain a 30 foot aura from a list of options. You may want to check the book anyway because the Marshal can learn a Draconic Aura in place of a major aura. While none of the listed auras will directly soften up enemies, one will increase energy spell DC's while another grants the party DR x/magic.

Isn't the miniatures handbook completely inappropriate for normal D&D?

And about Kiai Shout; yes, I took it for my tank-character*. We were in a no-magic campaign, and I wanted something multi-target. Never got to use it, though; he only got it when we were almost done.

*) That one was fun. No-magic wilderness adventure, and I made an old character with my 17 in Charisma.

Um, no? Seriously, what do you mean? Two of the classes (Favored Soul and Warmage) appeared here first (or so I'm thinking) before they were copied into Complete Divine and Arcane, respectively. Several of the feats and spells in the book made their way into those other two. Yeah, the chapters at the back are more geared towards D&D miniatures rather than D&D, but the stuff at the front of the book is completely fine.
