Ok this may sound like a stupid question but here it goes.

Ok say im a 5th level character. +1La 2druid/ranger.

Now would my max skill ranks be for a 4th level character or a 5th level?

What about feats. If I gained one level would i get the 6th level feat?

What about feats like practiced spell caster? Would it raise the druids caster level to 5 or 4?

Skills, feats, the effect of Practiced Spellcaster, all these ignore LA. It doesn't factor in.

Max ranks, number of feats are based on HIT DICE. And hit dice can come from race or class levels, but not from LA.

For example, a doppelganger sorcerer 4 has an ECL of 12.
But, it has 8 hit dice. Four from race, 4 from class.

This character has maximum skill rank of 11 in all skills that are on the sorcerer class list and the monster description.

This character would have 3 feats.

If it took Practiced Spellcaster, it could cast its sorcerer spells at caster level 8.

LA is only applied to experience needed to level up

ECL - LA = HD

HD = Class levels + racial hit dice

Feats, skills, etc. are all based on HD, as noted previously.

Other then exp and party level, the only time LA may come into play is the very few abilities that specifically reference 'character level.'

But that's pretty fuzzy ground and most DMs are likely to rule that even such abilities use CL and not ECL.

Ok so how does this work exactly. I started in a 5th level game. I have an LA of 1. Can I pay off the level at any time after 3rd level or just at third level? Only on times I gain a level. Say I gain my 7th level would i pay 6000 exp right then and keep me at 6th level?

You can buy off LA at any level after you're able to buy it off, but only when leveling up.

When you level up and buy off LA, your LA goes down by one, your level goes up by one, but your ECL stays the same.

So if you have 2 LA, 2 HD, and 5 levels, you have ECL 9. When you reach 6th level, you can LA buyoff, so you have 1 LA, 2 HD, and 6 levels. Your ECL is still 9, and your Xp total is the minimum for ECL 9.

I've just read the rule about LA buyoff. Does it work like this? I have a pc who is starting out as level three and i'm playing a catfolk which is +1 el race. So he'd have two class levels plus one el of adjustment (since they don't have racial HD). So when i gain my next level I can buy it off for ECL-1x1000xp for a total of 4000xp (if the dm allows this). After that I'd gain xp as normal and get my full progression. Right?

Does having an EL race prevent a character from getting his/her background skills?

You would only be paying 3000 exp to buy it off. Since its ECL -1x1000 and you would be ECL 4 so - 1 from that is 3 and then x 1000 is 3000.

But it also says you cant buy off levels after you have passed your chance. Which in my opinon is dumb.

I dont understand your other question though

Ah, I was assuming you had started play at a higher level or acquired te template later. Yes, if you're playing through the progression, your only change is at those times (though the next level after the introduction of the system should be allowed as well).

And yes, Even with LA, you get x4 skill points with your first HD.

Actually that was my first post to this thread. I've been trying to find out info like this for a little while but can't search the forum (the search button at the top only directs me to articles).

I'm glad about still getting the first level bonus points; thought i'd be paying a premium since this is a rogue character.
