Is there a rule about purchasing a language? My Dm want me to study before a get the language?

He won't let me purchase a language if I have not hear it one.

The rule in the player Hankbook is not clear about this.

I know that I can not (sorry. forgot the "not") have druidic. I'm a bard so it cost me 1 skill point / language.

Anything more? Is there a rule somewhere(like book X page Y)?

If I want to swing, I don't have to take a course before a take rank in swimming!

What do you thing?

Officially there is no written rule requiring one to have ever even heard of a language before mysteriously knowing it. However it is perfectly reasonable for a DM to say, you've never heard the language before in your life, how on earth are you supposed to become an expert overnight. Most other skills you just improve, get better on, and can do to some degree no matter what. Speaking a language is pretty much the only skill of which as written you go from unable to understand a single word, to a true expert overnight.

I understand but i think it apply to all skill. I except the rule that I must had heard the language before. IT like ride a horse. How can I ride a horse if I have not seen a horse before? But once you see someone riding a horse, must you take couse or study the horseman how he ride the horse.

I think is like language, once you heard a language, you can learn it. Don't forget, bard is the only class that language is class skill. He is an expert of language and displomaty.

you could explain that your bard has heard some tales of when he was near ___the region its spoken___ and he has been studying them ever since.

This could be lumped under bardic knowledge.

I know that I can have druidic. I'm a bard so it cost me 1 skill point / language. When it comes to Druidic, your Bard should have a hard time learining it as . . .

"A druid also knows Druidic, a secret language known only to druids, which she learns upon becoming a 1st-level druid. Druidic is a free language for a druid; that is, she knows it in addition to her regular allotment of languages and it doesn’t take up a language slot. Druids are forbidden to teach this language to nondruids."

That's an easy enough answer for the amoral being who can cast spells & wants to learn Druidic: Dominate yourself up a teacher. :)

Actually, you can learn Druidic as a non-druid, but only if you spend skill points to do so. Its listed in the Speak Languages skill for a reason.

Yes, druids are forbidden to teach it. Does not mean thay can't. just that they arn't supposed to.

Then there is this, in the Druid class description:

Ex-Druids
A druid who ceases to revere nature, changes to a prohibited alignment, or teaches the Druidic language to a nondruid loses all spells and druid abilities (including her animal companion, but not including weapon, armor, and shield proficiencies). She cannot thereafter gain levels as a druid until she atones (see the atonement spell description).

So a non-druid can learn to speak Druidic.

Go see the first post. I made a mistake and correct it. I can not speak druidic and I will not speak it.
