Large And In Charge is a feat from Sword and First (I think it's in Draconomicon as well).

The essence of the feat is to enable a large being to try to keep a medium or smaller being at a distance, so the large being can reach his smaller foe but the foe can't reach him. Quite a handy feat, if you're large and you can pull off the logistics of movement involved. (It kinda reminds me of a big bully stiff-arming a little kid.)

My question is... Can you see any reason this feat can't be used to keep a medium or smaller foe close to you (instead of at a distance)? The idea works with the mechanics of the feat, but goes against the essence of the feat. It would be quite handy for an Occult Slayer trying to keep a caster close to him.

Stand Still? Not entirely sure on this one. Different feat of course but I think it works.

You could always use a harpoon (also in The Sword & The Fist as well as Frostburn, I think) to do the same. If you stick an opponent, you can control a 30 foot trailing rope with opposed Str checks. In theory, you just hold onto the rope closer, and reel him in.

As for using the feat, I'd say no. I think the fluff behind it is more of a knock-back mechanic.

Isn't that a Psionic feat?

HA!! That's a good one! Fun, but I don't think the logistics would work out in the end.

You're agreeing with my statement about the "essence" of the feat. But, on the other hand... The mechanics do work, to use it as a feat that keeps your opponent close. Can you disagree with that?

Any thoughts on twisting a feat like that even if I'm using the rules correctly? Afterall, the name of the feat is "Large and in Charge" -- implying that a large being is "in charge" of others in his threatened area - manipulating their movement.

Originally published in Expanded Psionics Handbook, but the feat is general and doesn't actually have any psionic ties.

Stand Still [General]

You can prevent foes from fleeing or closing.
Prerequisite

Str 13.
Benefit

When a foe’s movement out of a square you threaten grants you an attack of opportunity, you can give up that attack and instead attempt to stop your foe in his tracks. Make your attack of opportunity normally. If you hit your foe, he must succeed on a Reflex save against a DC of 10 + your damage roll (the opponent does not actually take damage), or immediately halt as if he had used up his move actions for the round.

Since you use the Stand Still feat in place of your attack of opportunity, you can do so only a number of times per round equal to the number of times per round you could make an attack of opportunity (normally just one).
Normal

Attacks of opportunity cannot halt your foes in their tracks.

Wow, the verbiage for Stand Still is almost identical to Large And In Charge. The advantageous difference is that L&iC allows you to actually take the AoO and the opposed check is Str based to keep the opponent from moving.

With that logic, I'm starting to lean towards being able to use L&iC as a feat to keep your foe close as well as at a distance. But, I still have an open ear to scrutiny. Convince me otherwise, please!

If someone is moving "out" of your threatened area and is not tumbling or using the full withdraw action from your furthest reach, then this feat would allow you to stop them there.

Since your AoO triggers as they start to leave, if you succeed, they stay in the original square they started moving from.

So it doesn't matter which direction they're moving from, as long as the AoO is triggered off of their movement.

Sounds good to me. I'm liking this feat more and more.

This sounds like the perfect feat for a Large-sized Fighter/Occult Slayer (me).

Thanks.
