| TicTacFinger03-26-07, 10:54 PM | I am a human fighter on my way to become a Cavalier. I want to get the "Monkey Grip" feat to use a Large heavy Lance, for the additional damage and to increase the weapons reach. One of our players is adimit that you can't use a two handed weapon with one hand. But the lances weapon discription says "while mounted, you can wield a lance with one hand". Any thoughts? |
| Slimgauge03-27-07, 10:18 AM | I think if you have Monkey Grip you could (assuming you're Medium) wield a Large lance as if it was a Medium lance (except for the -2 attack). Medium Character with Lance: wpn size wielded on foot while mounted atkmod dmg Medium: Two-Handed One-Handed 0 1d8 Large: N/A (can't wield) Two-Handed (*) -2 2d6 Large w Grip: Two-Handed One-Handed -2 2d6 I don't think you'd get any extra reach, however. The SRD says "A typical Large character wielding a reach weapon of the appropriate size can attack a creature 15 or 20 feet away." Your weapon may now be large, but you're still not, even with Monkey Grip. |
| ClementWillowbreaker03-27-07, 10:20 AM | All these Monkey Grip questions are answered preemptively- you actually don't want to use it, you just think you do because you haven't considered it fully. You will not do more damage, because you will miss more often. If you started Huge, then it might have an advantage. But you should just take Weapon Focus or something and not worry. |
| tarkin03-27-07, 11:37 AM | As others stated, Monkey Grip is not a feat people should try to take. It does not increase your reach at all, and unless you start out as Huge, Power Attack is a far better way to increase your damage. Friends don't let friends take Monkey Grip Unless they are freakin' huge, that is. |
| TicTacFinger03-27-07, 01:31 PM | I was willing to take the -2 on attacks with "Monkey Grip" because being mounted gives me a +1 bonus to my attacks againast medium creatures and I already have weapon focus lance giving me the other +1, to cancel the pelenty of a large weapon. All I wanted was the increase in reach out of the weapon, since that is not availble then my intrest in the feat is gone. |
| Slimgauge03-27-07, 01:36 PM | There's the "Lunging Strike" feat from PH2 for an increase in reach, but it only works on offence, you have to give up your full attack to do it, and it doesn't change what squares you threaten. |
| kjenks03-27-07, 01:50 PM | Here are the feats you reallly want: Mounted Combat / Ride-by Attack / Spirited Charge (you probably already have these) Weapon Focus (Lance) / Weapon Specialization (Lance) / Melee Weapon Mastery (piercing) (PH2) Power Attack / Improved Bull Rush / Shock Trooper (Complete Warrior) Ride! Poke! And miss no more! The Shock Trooper feat has this Heedless Charge tactic that works really well with Ride-by Attack. Check it out. It means that your two-handed Power Attack mounted lance charges will rarely miss and will inflict astounding amounts of damage. And because of Ride-by Attack, you're not sitting 5 ft. from the monster you just poked, waiting to get creamed by a full attack. Instead, you're all the way across the battlemat, lining up for another charge. |
