Lasso object or foe and Use Rope? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have a player who is keen on using Use Rope to lasso objects or (in one case) a foe. I have allowed it, with a rather high DC, but since this character has a rather high skill modifier for this skill, they have been successful in quite a few cases, making this a somewhat powerful skill...

Is there any precedent for using this skill for lassoing things? I could find no reference to it in my admittedly haphazard searches in the core rulebooks...

Also, when she has used this on a humanoid foe, I required a successful Use Rope DC 25 to lasso the foe, and then a grapple to succeed at pulling the foe prone. Is this appropriate, or is there some other process that might serve better?

Thanks in advance...

In the Planar Handbook, I think there is actually a weapon called the lasso. I'd look into that.

If it's not there, then I might have seen it in an Eberron or Faerun book.

I just base it off the net, but you don't get the entangling effect. Otherwise everything is the same: ranged touch to hit, opposed Str check to control movement, etc.

Also though, I grant proficiency if you have 5 ranks in Use Rope. You can fashion a lasso in a minute with a DC 15 Use Rope check, or in one round with a DC 25 check.

Perhaps using statistics of a lasso presented in Book of Exalted Deeds might be a good idea.

That's where I saw it. Silly me.

Stats for the lasso:
* 30’ max, Trip
* Ranged Touch to Partially Entangle (–2 on attacks, –4 penalty to Dexterity).
* By holding the attached rope, the thrower can keep the opponent within 30’ (opposed Strength checks) To remove, Escape Artist vs. DC 20 –or– Strength check vs. DC 23.

I wish there was some use that used 'Use Rope' simply because I want to get more use out of a use rope check, but alas there is not.

Houserule! Use the DM's friend (the +2 bonus)

5 ranks in 'use rope' give a +2 competence bonus to the touch attack AND/OR the escape artist & break DC's

Cool, thanks everyone for the excellent discussion of this.

Sounds like a very effective weapon for our halfing rogue, as long as there is a strong character handy to grab the rope after it has entangled the target... (insert picture of halfing bouncing along still holding rope attached to running NPC/monster...) :-)

Follow-up question: On a related note, how do opposed Strength checks work when there are multiple people holding the rope? It seems like in other cases one might add +2 for the help and then pick the best strength bonus, but I'm thinking it would have to be a bit more cumulative than that for a group strength check, right? (thinking of tug-of-war as the canonical case of this, for example)

Thanks again in advance...
