How does this work, exactly?

I can have a level 4 cohort, does that mean I can add the half celestial template to my heavy warhorse paladin mount?

no you actually take a hit on your leadership score on your cohort. When you take the leadership feat you gain an ally the rules for how the mechanics are in the dm manual. essentialy you gain a second character much like a squire in the case of a paladin feel free to class as you see fit. when i dm i use the rule of " your cohort is there to learn from you so why would a wizard want to hang out with a paladin. what would he have to learn." if you apply this basic guide line you should be able to keep it under control and making sense

At the DM discretion you can also use them combined to attract a special paladin mount, I believe. So a celestial warhorse would be possible, but only if your attracting one, not adding to a current mount, and only when you can attract a 6th level cohort (4 HD Warhorse +2 for celestial template). That's how I would rule it myself.

Hey, it depends on the particular wizard. A LG exalted-type wizard would have a lot to learn from a paladin. As a DM, I'd just insist on having the player write a decent personality/background for the cohort; and if it makes sense in-game, I'll allow it. (Except for pun-pun type craziness, obviously.)

My character Kady has a blink dog mount; the DM allowed this because she's a multiclassed paladin, and the usual mount would have gotten itself killed in six seconds flat. Also, halfling + riding dog is nice. Especially when you can increase your INT that level and learn its language! (Blink dogs are intelligent creatures with a language of their own. So I do Diplomacy checks instead of Handle Animal.) It's not near as cheesy as it sounds, because the blink dog can't take anybody with it when it Dimension Doors--so he's there mostly for flanking and transportation.
