| GreenKnight01-09-08, 07:29 PM | Hello, all. Just a couple quick questions, here. I'm hoping there're Feats that accomplish certain things, but I don't know if they actually exist, or if it's just wishful thinking on my part, so I thought I'd ask. First off, is there a Feat that eliminates the attack penalty for wielding a Tower Shield? Second, is there a Feat that grants a character additional Skill Points? Last but not least, is there a Feat that makes non-class skills into Class Skills? Thanks for the help, folks. |
| ferreon01-09-08, 07:41 PM | I don't know yes, called Open minded I think I don't think so but not sure |
| Tema6901-09-08, 07:45 PM | 1) Haven't heard of any. A GM could allow a player with a number of shield specialization feats to remove to penalty. 2) Open Minded. 3) In Heroes of Battle, there's a couple called something with Guerilla.. Guerilla Warrior and Guerilla Scout. They provide Listen, Spot, Hide and stuff like that. |
| GreenKnight01-09-08, 07:46 PM | Where's Open Minded? Nevermind. Found it. |
| SamueltheHammer01-09-08, 07:52 PM | Not sure on the first one, but there are several feats that add +2 to a dozen or so skill sets, and more than a few have pointed out "open minded". |
| BananaB01-09-08, 08:12 PM | Jack of all trades allows you to use all skills untrained, but i don't know of and that actually give you class skills. |
| highbulp01-09-08, 08:23 PM | Unearthed Arcana (also, here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/alternativeSkillSystems.htm#skillKnowled ge)) has a feat called Skill Knowledge that makes any two skills class skills. |
| rjsilverthorn01-09-08, 08:31 PM | Able Learner from Races of Destiny makes all skills "in class". Of course you have to take it at first level and be either Human or Doppleganger. |
| navar10001-09-08, 08:59 PM | Rokugan Campaign Setting has Versatile, which makes two cross-class skills into class skills. Forgotten Realms has Cosmopolitan which makes one cross-class skill into a class skill and gives a +2 bonus. Open Minded is already mentioned for +5 skill points. I don't think there is anything to eliminate the penalty for using a Tower Shield. For some reason I think Iron Heroes campaign setting eventually allows for such, but its system, while based on 3E, isn't compatible along side normal 3E dedicated warriors. The -2 to hit hurts, but if it helps, compare it to two weapon fighting which also incurs a -2 penalty. Instead of getting an extra attack, you get +2 to AC more than a heavy shield and cover when needed. Fighters don't have to spend a feat for it. A 16 ST fighter with Weapon Focus using a tower shield at 1st level is at +3 to hit, which isn't bad. Chain shirt, 12 DX, tower shield is AC 19, which is significant at low levels. It's a viable option. |
| BugHunter01-09-08, 09:03 PM | Able Learner from Races of Destiny makes all skills "in class". Of course you have to take it at first level and be either Human or Doppleganger. It only reduces the cost of the cross-class skills. Your max skill ranks is still based on it being cross-classed. |
| Sinfire Titan01-09-08, 10:51 PM | Gain Tower Shield proficiency? You don't apply the attack penalty when you are proficient with the shield you are using. Weapon, Armor, and Shield Proficiency A character who uses a weapon with which he or she is not proficient takes a -4 penalty on attack rolls. A character who wears armor and/or uses a shield with which he or she is not proficient takes the armor’s (and/or shield’s) armor check penalty on attack rolls and on all Strength-based and Dexterity-based ability and skill checks. The penalty for nonproficiency with armor stacks with the penalty for nonproficiency with shields Weapon, armor, or shield proficiency may be granted by the character's race, class or by the following feats: * Armor Proficiency (Light) * Armor Proficiency (Medium) * Armor Proficiency (Heavy) * Exotic Weapon Proficiency * Martial Weapon Proficiency * Shield Proficiency * Simple Weapon Proficiency * Tower Shield Proficiency This thread is now officially made of Fail for that question going unanswered for so many posts. |
| Ivellius01-09-08, 11:10 PM | Well, they're talking about the -2 penalty listed in the Player's Handbook for its unwieldiness, not the ACP. Strangely, I have a character in the campaign we just started who wanted to pick up a tower shield. And he's a 16 STR Fighter... |
| GreenKnight01-09-08, 11:22 PM | Gain Tower Shield proficiency? You don't apply the attack penalty when you are proficient with the shield you are using. This thread is now officially made of Fail for that question going unanswered for so many posts. Ivellius has the right of it. From the Tower Shield description. Shield, Tower This massive wooden shield is nearly as tall as you are. In most situations, it provides the indicated shield bonus to your AC. However, you can instead use it as total cover, though you must give up your attacks to do so. The shield does not, however, provide cover against targeted spells; a spellcaster can cast a spell on you by targeting the shield you are holding. You cannot bash with a tower shield, nor can you use your shield hand for anything else. When employing a tower shield in combat, you take a -2 penalty on attack rolls because of the shield’s encumbrance. |
| Sinfire Titan01-09-08, 11:25 PM | Ivellius has the right of it. From the Tower Shield description. Damn. Looks like I was off. I take back the Fail. |
| Gnarl01-10-08, 02:38 AM | Second, is there a Feat that grants a character additional Skill Points? If you're playing with exalted stuff, you also have Nymph's Kiss in the Book of Exalted Deeds. |
| InkBlot01-10-08, 01:22 PM | Last but not least, is there a Feat that makes non-class skills into Class Skills? Martial Study, from Tome Of Battle. It grants you one martial maneuver (usable once per encounter), and makes the skill associated with that maneuver's discipline into a permanent class skill for you. Martial Study is a Fighter bonus feat. Martial Key Discipline Skill Theme Desert Wind Tumble Fire and movement Devoted Spirit Intimidate Healing and tanking Diamond Mind Concentration Accuracy and speed Iron Heart Balance Wide swings and movement Setting Sun Sense Motive Throws and evasion Shadow Hand Hide Sneaking and debuffing Stone Dragon Balance Strong and stalwart Tiger Claw Jump Vicious and fast White Raven Diplomacy Rallying the troops The level of maneuvers you can get is determined by your initiator level. Your initiator level is equal to your level in a martial adept class, plus 1/2 your other levels. So an 2nd level Fighter has an initiator level of 1, and can use Martial Study to learn a 1st level maneuver and gain one class skill. |
| Brehon01-10-08, 02:55 PM | City Slicker from Races of Destiny gives you Disguise, Gather Information, Knowledge (local) and Forgery as class skills. What are they implying about city folk, I wonder? |
