I'm playing a gnome rogue 1/ ranger 2/ wizard 1 who has A LOT of skill points to spend. I'm looking for more specific rulings on the Profession skill. Because I would like to take some ranks in profession (tracker) or (bounty hunter). I was wondering if I would get any synergistic bonuses for my 5 ranks in Search, Knowledge (nature), or survival. I'd really like to find some well-bodied rules, not just designed to make me money, but also to help me track the evil Hobgoblin Warlord, Greb, whom I've been tracking for a month or so.

Thanks for your responses!

There is the section in the PH skill section which gives mechanics for skill synergies. For specific synergies not listed, ask your Dm to make some house rulings. For tracking, your profession tracker should help when using the track feat. Some other possibilities are knowledge(geography), knowledge(local> you could use your knowledge of the habits of the goblin etc. to make tracking easier...) Don't forget search, spot, gather information, disable device, and craft(trapmaking).

profession is one of those ambiguous things that lets you take alot of things all together and apply a general -2 or -4 to anything coming out of it. for instance Profession sailor would allow you to make knowledge locale (docks), nature (while at sea), use rope, and other skill checks easilly while only taking minimal penalties. basically what it is is a way to say, i do stuff but not because thats what i do, its because i use it. its real life experience not actual study that gives you ranks. because it is so broad its usually best to talk to your dm about it on a case by case situation. the other side of profession is that it allows you to do something to make money and RP while you're waiting on another adventure to come up. every now and then it actually comes in handy as is too, fo rinstance catching people in bluffs when you have first hand knowledge is alot easier. some one says they came in today on a certain ship when you were just on that ship and its been docked for a week and a half. yeah its fun.
