Hi There,
I'm looking at a feat in the PHB II called "Mad Foam Rager" (pg 80) and the description seems a little ambiguous.

It says, "As an immediate action you can choose to delay the effect of a single attack, spell or ability used against you. The damage or effect does not take hold until the end of your next turn."

Do you think this includes area effects like "Grease?" Or does it have to be a spell that targets you? Can I get your thoughts?

Yes it would. If it would have been otherwise they would have written Spell that target you. You delay the effect itself.

In contrast, I would interpret "used against you" as either (a) targeting you or (b) doing damage to you.

Grease, web, and other "environmental" effects that don't specifically target or damage you would not be affected. I wouldn't let it work against forcecube or resiliant sphere either, personally.

That can't be correct.

Grease does not target you, but it does effect you. Therefore, if you fail your save/balance check you can use Mad Foam Rager to delay the effect for 1 round. Same with web.

As for forcecube (forcecage), that spell would not be effected by Mad Foam Rager because there is no "Effect" of the spell *and* it does not target the character. The spell does not target nor offer a saving throw nor deals damage or applies a condition effect for YOU to YOU or on YOU. There is a forcecage here, not, a forcecage was cast ON YOU. You are within the area coincidentally, true, but you have suffered no saving throw, damage, or effect such as stun etc. If the forcecage knocked you prone or stunned you or etc. you could MFR through it. But it does not.

Resilient Sphere targets a creature AND offers a reflex save, so it most certainly can be ignored for 1 round via Mad Foam Rager, no question.

It certainly could be correct that I would interpret it that way, even if no one else would :)

The point is that I don't think the area version of grease is being used against you. The effect is to make a square slippery, and I don't see how that has anything to do with your personal resiliance or foamy madness. (The targeted version of grease would be fine, of course.)

Unless your DM says it doesn't work :) But for that one, I'd make sure to discuss my viewpoint with the player ahead of time, since I agree the text would rather suggest it works.

I agree with jaelis, grease is not really use against you, it's only used on a surface you can decide not to be on. But since the description is a little vague, I have to think you could delay that effect. However, if I remember correctly, mad foam rager can be used once per day, not sure this is the best way to use it.

Actually, the text says "once every time you use your rage or frenzy ability". I'm not a big fan of "up to the DM" arguments. Does anyone know if this has been addressed in errata or by the sage?

If the Mad Foam Barbarian can't delay the effect of Grease, then all area of effect spells would be equally "undelayable":

- Burning Hands? It doesn't target the barbarian, it creates a cone in the barbarian's general direction.
- Fireball? Doesn't target the barbarian, but sure as heck would affect him.
- Etc, etc

So, either Mad Foam Rager is very very limited, or it is quite quite powerful.

Hmm, yes, it would be nice with an official ruling on this...

What about vs an antimagic field cast around you? Its affecting you by taking away all your stuff.

Suffice to say the feat description is somewhat lacking in precision. ;)

A PC in one of my campaigns used it to delay the effects of an Awesome Blow attack. RAW, I think, but flying ten feet seconds after being struck by a giant clubs seems silly.

That picture just stuck in my mind. Hilarious!
