Has anyone actually sat down and thought about this. I mean, it seems to me that, while the formula for how much time it takes someone to create an item (1000gp per day - 8 hours a day) works for low level items, it breaks down a little at higher levels.

If my character wants to be a crafter, use a bit of xp, but cheaper stuff, all well and good. Create a +1 set of armour - no worries, that'll be a day of work. Create a ring of invisibility? Ok, only 20 days.

Now I'm an epic character and I want to create Bracers of Relentless Might. Ok, that'll be a little over 12 YEARS !!!! please. Blimey! I think I'd rather adventure some more.

Anyone else noticed this anomoly? And does anyone have a good solution?

Dan :)

Yeah, I noticed the same thing.

Even some non-epic items are ridiculous. You can make a ring with effect X, which would cost 100,000 gold. But 100 days to make a ring? I don't care what the effect is, no one takes 100 8-hour days of work to make a ring.

Anyways, there are item creation feats in the Ebberon Campaign Setting that shortens crafting time, and apparently it can be taken multiple times and it's effects stack. That might be worth looking into.

True - but do I really want to spend my few feats on reducing what is already a ridiculous time? I'm thinking someone needs to completely rethink the math here.

Nice to know you noticed it too though, and it's not just me being cranky. :D

Guess why so many high-level item crafters hang out on timeless planes. ;)

My personal solution to this as an artificer is to create my own personal assembly line of dedicated wrights (Eberron Campaign Setting). Stick them in a bag of holding and have them work together on creating whichever items you desire.

There is the epic feat which cuts down crafting time by 10.
The epic arcane artisan prc(on wotc epic insights page) lets you craft even faster.
Wish lets you obtain items as a standard action if you have enough xp to spare.

I guess it is more of a game balance thing. 6 months to craft a staff of power?

Awesome. Thanks for the info guys. Those Dedicated Wrights were something I didn't know about (I spend my time in the Forgotten Realms, not Eberron) so thanks Chimaera.

And thanks for the link to WoTC's Epic Insights. I'll go check it out.

The ELH also contains the 9th-level spell Genesis, which can be used to make your own private plane. The text gives a blanket "you can pretty much do anything except for these specific exceptions" paragraph, and thus you can presumably control the time trait. Set it to something wild like ten years per day on the Material Plane, allowing you to put a Dedicated Wright or few there to industriously make whatever epic magic item you ask for within a few days. Do make sure not to leave them there, for homunculi can go insane too! ;)

Psionics has a similarly named 9th-level power for shapers that does this sort of thing, too.

It's not 100 days to make the ring. Most of that time is probably spent enchanting.

And carving intracate runes into a tiny ring is hard work.

By the way, those Eberron craft-cost reducing feats were pointed out to not be able to be taken more thanonce in the errata. The table's superscript saying that you can was a typo.
