| OmNefarious03-06-07, 10:08 AM | I have recently made a Aasimar Half-Celestial Paladin/Cleric/Exorcist. He is lvl 17 and I have access to quite a few spell-like abilities. These range from once a day spells to 3/day spells. Most of them are really buffers and a couple are healing related. But I do have a couple of attack ones that do some decent dmg. My question is this, can I use a metamagic feat such as "maximize spell" on a spell-like ability? For instance I get cure serious wounds 3/day (I think), and I am sure the DM is going to put us up against some pretty tough stuff so I would like to know that I would be able to have the chance of healing someone with the full 3d8 and not a random 3d8. I know I can use this feat for my regular spells, but this is just something that I am curious about. |
| Puca03-06-07, 10:12 AM | You cannot use a feat that adjusts the spell-slot of the ability, because abilities dont have spell-slots to adjust. There are feats, like Maximize, that are specifically for SLAs, and you can find many of them here (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/monsterFeats.htm). |

| tarkin03-06-07, 01:09 PM | Would you be happier if he described it as an Aasimar Half-Non-Celestial? "Half-celestial" is an inherited template that can be added to any living, corporeal creature with an Intelligence score of 4 or higher and nonevil alignment (referred to hereafter as the base creature). Aasimar are living, corporeal creatures with an int of higher than 4 and non-evil. The living is confirmed by looking up Outsider, which includs this line: Unlike most other living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature... For an interesting idea, consider a Half-Celesital Tiefling (Alignment should be Neutral). |
| karthos03-06-07, 01:21 PM | I started a thread on the character optimization board which talked about a possible way of using metamagic feats with spell-like abilities, though it honestly wasn't that popular. You can find it here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=795613 Basically the rules state that you can't use metamagic feats on spell like abilities for the exact reason that Puca said, SLAs don't have spell slots to adjust so you can't use a feat that adjusts spell slots with an SLA. The leap then is that if you can find a way to eliminate the need to adjust spell slots then you should be able to use a metamagic feat with an SLA. Of course this means that since some metamagic feats have no slot adjustment they should already be able to be used with SLAs. At least that was the idea. I have sent a message to Customer Service about this but have not heard anything back yet. |
| Oliver D'Argent03-06-07, 01:47 PM | The only metamagic feats that have official approval for use with spell-like abilities are the Sudden metamagic feats found in Complete Arcane. The feats in this group can only be used once per day, so they are self-limiting. |
| OmNefarious03-06-07, 01:59 PM | Would you be happier if he described it as an Aasimar Half-Non-Celestial? Aasimar are living, corporeal creatures with an int of higher than 4 and non-evil. So wait Im not supposed to have an Aasimar as a Half-Celestial? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh and Puca thanks for the link. I will talk to my DM about seeing if I can make a maximize spell-like ability feat like the ones they have for empower |
