Is this feat really as good as it seems. A character gets 2 moves (one while casting) per round?

Is there any errata on this feat that changes how it works? Or a question in the FAQ?

Thanks,

Dan.

It's Shot on the Run or Spring Attack for casters. I don't quite see what the issue is.

Yes, that WOULD be too good.

But that is not what the feat does. You have misread what the feat does.

It in no way gives you an extra move (Yes, I know that a literal reading of the feat seems to IMPLY that it does. So what? It never says you can do more than a regular move, you are just reading that into what it says.)

The feat, like all the spring attack type feats just lets you take an action in the middle of your move, it does not give you an extra move.

This is a common error, because the spring attacks feat were worded VERY poorly.

They all mean "as a Move + a standard action" even though they are written as if they just take a Standard Action, leaving another Move action free to do as you want.

It is explicit that you move up to your speed and cast the spell ... as a single standard action.

In none of the move+attack feats do you have any risk of losing the spell altogether; not even Flyby Attack, which allows spellcasting in the middle of a movement. With Mobile Spellcasting you do have such a risk. Hence the superior benefit.

The risk of losing the spell is quite high when you can first take the feat, and is still present when the character gets 9th level spells, unless significant resources have gone into boosting Constitution.

So there is no consensus on Mobile Spellcasting or no errata/faq that clears this up?

No errata/faq that I know of, but the feat seems pretty clear. As a standard action move up to your speed and cast a spell. Then you have a move action left. You are not taking an action in the middle of your move, you are casting a spell during your entire movement within this standard action. But you do not get two move actions. For all intents and purposes that is what will take place but the fact that it says the move is part of a standard action prevents abuses like standing still and making the check and then doing two move equivalent actions.

So, does that mean then that my cleric with mobile spellcasting, moves and casts a spell at eh same time, and then he has another move action. But since I can't move again, what do I do, for the move?

I haven't read the text, but assuming you couldn't move again, you could do lots of things other than moving with that Move action. You could draw a potion, pick up something, etc.

I did a little bit more research and found enough respected people saying you do get a double move that I have to backtrack a little bit.

But I still think that this feat is NOT worded substianitally differently than Spring Attack.

I would read it that it grants a Standard Action in the middle of your move, not in addition to it.

The descriptive text says "allows you to move while casting" It does NOT say "lets you move twice and also move in the middle of your casting.

There is no other feat that grants you two move actions and a standard action.

Such a thing would be overpowered in my opinion.

Part of the problem is that the people that wrote the books are NOT gramatically trained. They write like a highschool senior does, not an english professor. Almost the exact same arguement you are using for Mobile Spellcasting would work for Spring Attack. I do not think it is not true for Mobile Spellcasting anymore than it is true for Spring Attack.

But I have seena couple of respected people say otherwise, so I suggest you ask your DM.

He should be the final rule anyway. If you are the DM, then think about how people might abuse it. (Also note, in D&D online Mobile Spellcasting lets you move SLOWLY, not faster)
