Ive read in many places that you can now choose your feats for a monk instead of getting those few proposed in the phb or in the styles of unearthed arcana. I have yet to see an official ruling on this however and wonder if it is a ruling or if it just some of the people on the optimization board making their own rules up.
If there is an official ruling can someone direct me to it?

If the feat says it can be taken as a Monk bonus feat, then it can be taken as a monk bonus feat. For example, the Ki Blast feat says a Monk can take it as the 6th level Monk bonus feat, so that is the only time you can take it as such. Otherwise, it's only based on your style.

A handful of feats in the PHBII (and perhaps other places) specifically say they can be taken by a monk in place of the regular bonus feat options.

I'm pretty sure that if the feat doesn't specifically say it works that way, a monk can't take it that way.

Oriental Adventures had a ton of feats that monks could choose instead of the normal bonus feats. It was originally a 3.0 book, but was updated to 3.5 in Dragon Magazine 318.
