| Platstud08-10-07, 02:30 PM | Does anyone know of a feat that allows you to combine Monk and Fighter levels for the purposes of Unarmed Strike damage progression? |
| Kouk08-10-07, 02:39 PM | There is none. Closes is Superior Unarmed Strike (ToB), but that works just as well for straight Monks as it does for multiclassed Monks (with debate as to what happens level 20+). |
| tarkin08-10-07, 03:19 PM | Closest to this are: Ascetic Knight and Ascetic Hunter, which let you stack levels in Paladin and levels in Ranger, among other things. (Thank you Torg Smackie for correcting me below) I can easily see a feat that just lets you stack fighter levels and monk levels and also lets you multi-class freely. That ability itself is clearly in line with the Ascetic series of feats. (Actually, you could even see an argument for doing something extra, like also making a skill or two from your monk list into a class skill for your fighter class as well) |
| NeueRegel08-10-07, 03:49 PM | My fave character is a 9th Fighter/11th monk, so I know where you are coming from. That said, we play core 3.5, so I never much thought about it. But that doesn't mean I don't read around the boards and that. I know there is a feat that lets a Ranger be a Paladin / A Paladin be a Ranger mixed, and the classes stack for the holy mount and the favoured enemy and the animal as well as smiting and such. I can't see why there would not be a feat that let you somehow combine the bab of a fighter with the monk damage, though we would never play it. But it's just a game, screw it, somebody has prolly figured it out. *smirk* Neue |
| NeueRegel08-10-07, 04:02 PM | New Character Class: Chuck Norris. You begin play as a 20th level Ranger/20th level Monk. You must be human, and have cool theme music. New Character Class: Jackie Chan. You begin play as a 20th level Monk/20th level Rogue. You must be human, or mayhaps half elven, and you start with non proficiency in Common. In either case, you are not an Epic character, you just never get played. In fact, you barely ever get watched because that new episode of Heroes comes on this week, and that blonde cheerleader is hot. |
| Mindolin08-10-07, 05:35 PM | The best bet is Superior Unarmed Strike, which works very well because you should take at most 4 levels of fighter anyway. And it is actually very clear what happens, as above level 16 you do not increase your unarmed damage. |
| TorgSmackie08-10-07, 09:33 PM | Closest to this are: Ascetic Knight and Ascetic Hunter, which let you stack levels in Paladin and levels in Rogue (among other things)Ascetic Hunter is ranger. Ascetic Rogue is rogue. |

I'll be starting as 1 Monk/6 Fighter. |
| Majick08-13-07, 11:17 AM | If you can help it dude, now that superior unarmed strike is around, don't take the 1 lvl of Monk, seriously, just go Fighter all the way the feat Superior Unarmed Strike either: increased every so often based on hit die (eventually 2d6) or give +4 to Monk levels for determining unarmed strike damage (which is 1d8 FOREVER with only 1 lvl of Monk) Go a Fighter 7, take: Weapon Focus: Fist (at lvl 1) Weapon Specialization: Fist (preferably sooner than improved grapple) Improved Unarmed Strike (at lvl 1) Superior Unarmed Strike (at lvl 3) Improved Natural Attack (at lvl 4) Improved Grapple (somewhere in there) Also, ask your DM if you can enchant some leather fighting gloves to make this all more viable, if not, get an Amulet of...er... Magic Fang (i think it's called that... it's in the DMG)? :D Hope that helped |
| Platstud08-13-07, 11:55 AM | give +4 to Monk levels for determining unarmed strike damage (which is 1d8 FOREVER with only 1 lvl of Monk) That's why I was looking for the feat to make Fighter levels stack with the Monk level for unarmed damage. If I can't get this feat, I probably won't take the Monk level. |
| NobodyRemembersThis08-13-07, 01:16 PM | If you haven't taken an levels in monk at all, take at least 1 for any unarmed build. A single level of monk gets you: Increased base damage with Unarmed Strike, Monk AC bonuses, a bonus feat, +2 to all saves, more class skills, and extra skill points, and flurry of blows. You lose 1 point of BAB and -1 average HP. You gain more than 3 times as much as you lose. You'd be crazy not to. |
| Dheran08-13-07, 09:28 PM | You're better off taking zero levels of Monk; just get a Fanged Ring and either the Monk's Belt or the Superior Unarmed Strike feat. A Monk level means you'll get poor results from Superior Unarmed Strike, and also has significant restrictions: alignment (must be lawful), later development (no more Monk levels, ever), and armor/encumbrance (no AC benefit if you have any armor or medium+ encumbrance). These restrictions don't make for a happy Fighter. Pay some NPC caster for Magic Fang, Greater (+5) and Permanency on it. Even if this gets dispelled occasionally it's cheaper than an Amulet of Natural Fists. |
| NobodyRemembersThis08-15-07, 12:12 AM | I dissagree. Why waste all of that gp on a magic item when you can get the benefits of that magic item + more skills and a bonus feat? |
| Dheran08-15-07, 07:25 AM | Why waste all of that gp on a magic item when you can get the benefits of that magic item + more skills and a bonus feat?Because that single Monk level limits the benefits provided by Superior Unarmed Strike, whereas if you don't have any Monk levels the feat keeps increasing your unarmed damage until class level 16. And also because the Fanged Ring doesn't just grant Improved Unarmed Strike; it also grants Improved Natural Attack (unarmed strike) plus something extra: CON damage on an unarmed critical. Additionally, you need to satisfy the aligment restriction, and you can never later decide to become a Monk if you dip for just a single level. There are lots of reasons not to dip into Monk for one level. |

As for the Superior Unarmed Strike, that's why I wanted the feat to have Fighter and Monk levels stack for it. |
| Steely_Dan08-15-07, 09:48 AM | ASCETIC WARRIOR Prerequisites: Improved Unarmed Strike, Weapon Focus (unarmed strike), Weapon Specialization (unarmed strike). Benefit: Your fighter and monk levels stack to determine your unarmed damage. You may multi-class between fighter and monk freely (alignment and XP penalties still apply as normal). |
| L33tSpud08-24-07, 10:33 AM | Is this a document feat or a realy nice on you kinda created on your own? |
| imakuni6708-31-07, 03:44 PM | If you are going for some monk dipage, go for 2 levels to get evasion an a bonus feat! Is that ascetic warrior an official feat? |
| Decinious09-02-07, 10:25 AM | Does superior unarmed strike truely limit you to +4 to your monk level or wouldn't you get both and take the higher? |
| Jay_Ibero_91109-02-07, 01:52 PM | Does superior unarmed strike truely limit you to +4 to your monk level or wouldn't you get both and take the higher? As written if you are a monk you automatically apply the feat to your monk unarmed damage, replacing the level-based benefit. However, if you take the feat AFTER your monk level/levels, you could argue that you are not a monk, you are an ex-monk, and take the normal benefit of the feat. This would ultimately be up to your DM however. Combining Superior Unarmed Strike with a monk's belt however puts you up to 1d10 Unarmed damage, beating non-monk superior unarmed strike until 16th level. For those complaining about the alignment restriction, the OP is starting at 7th level, so he doesn't have to be lawful if the monk level isn't his most recent. Fanged Ring works just as good for a monk as a non-monk. INA and con damage are a crit make the item just as desirable. The OP has stated he doesn't intend to take any further levels of monk, so the multiclassing is not an issue. Ultimately though, there's not much reason to worry about the base damage anyway, as the large majority of damage comes from other sources. |
| Dheran09-02-07, 02:03 PM | Combining Superior Unarmed Strike with a monk's belt however puts you up to 1d10 Unarmed damage The feat and the item don't combine that way. Both reference your actual Monk level, so you get the better boost (+5 from the Belt), not both. The language of these boosts is much different from things like the Orange Ioun stone:Orange Prism: +1 caster level If both the Monk's Belt and Superior Unarmed Strike granted +5 Monk levels and +4 Monk levels, respectively, they would stack. Instead they treat your unarmed strike as being boosted to some number of levels higher than your actual Monk level. Hence, no stacking benefit. You get 1d8 unarmed damage. |

Instead they treat your unarmed strike as being boosted to some number of levels higher than your actual Monk level. Hence, no stacking benefit. You get 1d8 unarmed damage. That's one interpretation, but there is no RAW explicitly stating that is how it works. 5 levels higher + 4 levels higher equal 9 levels higher. And neither effect specifically says it modifies your actual monk level, but merely that either: The wearer’s AC and unarmed damage is treated as a monk of five levels higher. or ...you instead deal unarmed damage as a monk 4 levels higher. So, if you are a Monk 6, you deal unarmed damage as a Monk 6. If you are a Monk 6 with a Monk's Belt you deal unarmed damage as an 11th level monk. Add in Superior Unarmed Strike, you deal unarmed damage as a 15th level monk. Both abilities reference and modify your monk level for the purposes of unarmed damage, so there is no reason they should not stack. Superior unarmed strike is not all that different from practiced spellcaster. You could re-write it as Special:If you are a monk, your monk level increases by +4 for the purposes of unarmed damage instead. It means exactly the same thing as: Special: If you are a monk, you instead deal unarmed damage as a monk of four levels higher |
| Pinfeldorf09-02-07, 08:17 PM | I hate to point out something glaringly obvious, but I would trade 1 BAB for Evasion and Flurry of Blows any day of the week, any time of day, and never second guess myself. |
| Terric09-02-07, 11:50 PM | I recall no feat for that combination, but I do know that it's not hard to make up the feat. Both Monk and Fighter have their share of trade-off multiclass feats, and obviously they've been balanced. The name's even right there; you'd call it Ascetic Warrior, and you'd gain Monk Unarmed Strike damage and Fighter levels for the sake of Fighter-only Feats. Of course, there could always be a reason why they didn't invent a feat like this... monks with Weapon Supremacy? I shudder. |
| imakuni6709-02-07, 11:52 PM | I hate to point out something glaringly obvious, but I would trade 1 BAB for Evasion and Flurry of Blows any day of the week, any time of day, and never second guess myself. Not to mention the monk bonus feats. Evasion is always amazing. Monk 2/Fighter 4 then take astetic warrior. You can't just rely so heavily magic items guys...antimagic fields, even a sneaky ethereal flicher can ruin your day. If a magic item gives you a feat or increases your stats, you can't just take feats or PRC's based on that. They aren't permenant! |
| dman1123509-03-07, 12:07 AM | There is a reason that they did not make a feat like this. Look at the others. Are they optimal multi-class options? Monk with ANYTHING pretty much: no. Monk/scorcerer: definitly no. Rogue/swashbuckler: no. They aren't very good at all, until you add this feat. Monk/fighter, just doesn't make sense. And it's not a bad multi classing opportunity, at least, not as bad as monk/scorcerer. These types of feats merely make a poor choice a possible choice. And yes, monks with weapon supremacy: shudder. Also, where is that ring from? I must have it!!! |
| GawainBS09-03-07, 05:01 AM | If you're into Psionics, you might consider the feat Tashalatora: it stacks monk levels with one psionic class of your choice for AC, Speed, Flurry and Unarmed Strike. |
| maddogawogg09-03-07, 10:47 AM | Yeah is there any verbiage ANYWHERE for stacking class features such as these??? for instance the monk unarmed damage or perhaps the clerics ability to turn. I know there's a crap load of stuff that adds to effective turning level, but does it all stack together? i've looked at the various articles here on wizards to see if it addresses it, and I can't find nothin. :( I know "somewhere" I saw something about the +1 to caster level thingies stacking, which would make me think that the various wordings such as shown for the monk belt and the superior unarmed strike feat would stack. as the one poster pointed it out, it's virtually the same as saying: you're considered 4 levels higher or +4 to level to determine effect.... because these things don't list a specific "bonus type", then one might look at the verbiage for stacking typeless bonuses, which i could be making this up, but i think it says something like they stack with everything else, but not themselves... then of course it goes on to give horribly vague exceptions... I think i'm going to send a question in to sage advice or whatever, and ask how the class feature stacking stuff works... and for your useless trivia knowledge... i was thinking of this combo of stuff: monk 7 sorcerer 1 abjurant champion 5 duelist 7 have dood take superior unarmed strike. monk belt. improved natural attack. then the spell(s) mighty wallop or greater mighty wallop.... woot woot! |
