| dragon22128408-13-07, 01:49 AM | Hi When i wield as a medium sized char a large weapon (e.a. Greatsword) is my reach 5ft or 10ft.? And same question with a spiked chain.... 10ft or 20ft.? When i get reach, could i attack in my melee or is it treated as a Glaive. thanks |
| Unholy_King08-13-07, 02:27 AM | Larger Weapons do not give Reach. |
| bobothechimp08-13-07, 03:25 AM | Reach is based on the size of the wielder, not the size of the weapon. |
| tarkin08-13-07, 11:07 AM | In d20, a larger muscle powered weapon does more damage but has the same reach. This is directly opposite from real life. In real life a larger muscle powered weapon does the same or LOWER damage but has greater reach. |
| Majick08-13-07, 11:21 AM | See, now when you say a Large Weapon like a Greatsword, that is 3.0 thinking a Greatsword, while being two-handed and very big (5-6 feet of steel) is considered, quite simple, a Two-Handed Martial Weapon for a Medium sized creature you could (technically) compare it to a LARGE SIZED Longsword in damage (both 2d6), but a LARGE SIZED Greatsword would deal 3d6... make sense? |
| Spikes01k08-13-07, 04:58 PM | Personally I would house rule that for every three sizes YOU are above medium your reach is increased by 5 feet. |
| Knightblde08-13-07, 05:49 PM | Personally I would house rule that for every three sizes YOU are above medium your reach is increased by 5 feet. Why would you rule that? Isn't it 5' reach for EVERY size larger than medium? Another question, if you have the wonderful Strongarm Bracers from the MIC, can you use a reach weapon in one hand, say a halberd and still gain the reach? |
| Unholy_King08-13-07, 06:09 PM | Another question, if you have the wonderful Strongarm Bracers from the MIC, can you use a reach weapon in one hand, say a halberd and still gain the reach? If Strongarm Bracers work the same as Powerful build, then no. Powerful build does not allow you to use a Medium two-hander in one hand. |
| Knightblde08-13-07, 07:24 PM | If Strongarm Bracers work the same as Powerful build, then no. Powerful build does not allow you to use a Medium two-hander in one hand. You are correct, Powerfull build states, you can use a weapon one size larger, but space and reach are the same. Strongarm Bracers count you as one size larger for using weapons. This is completly different. A large creature could use a Medium two-hander in one hand, correct? This would in effect give me reach if I used a medium reach weapon. |

Sorry, I would say that with a two handed weapon only. Only logical that they would get more reach. |
| risner08-13-07, 10:17 PM | medium sized is my reach 5ft or 10ft.? I cut out all that is important for your questions and left the unimportant info on the floor. The only thing that determines your reach is your size. You are Medium. Medium creatures have a reach of 5 ft. Even if you could manage (you can't) to wield a colossal weapon, your reach with be 5 ft with your 99 ft sword. |
| Mojo_Rat08-14-07, 12:32 AM | Sorry, I would say that with a two handed weapon only. Only logical that they would get more reach. The thing is Game mechanics and Logic do not always go hand in hand. Reach is treated as a powerful ability by game and the weapon you wield unless deliberately a reach weapon (like polearms which have disadvantages) does not determine your reach. An ogre with no weapon has the same reach as an ogre with an ogre sized two handed sword. Sure it doesnt nececarily fit logic but it doesnt matter that is how the game mechanics work. The Ability to wield large size weapons is already pretty strong no need to make it stronger. |
| Branto08-14-07, 02:08 AM | In real life a larger muscle powered weapon does the same or LOWER damage but has greater reach. I dunno. I'm pretty sure a two handed sword is going to split a skull easier than a pocketknife anytime. ;) You see, It takes more EFFORT to swing a large weapon, but greater mass makes for better inertia. You could stab at a well-armored person as quickly as you like with a knife, but you'll have so little inertia that you won't be able to penetrate, whereas a bigger and heavier weapon, although slower, is going to take a lot more to stop once you get it moving. It's like chopping down a tree. Do you use a knife because you can swing it faster? I don't think you'll have much luck like that. You need a great big axe. |
