Normally, at level 1, you get 4 times the amount of skill points that you normally get.

For example: The fighter gets (2+INT mod)*4 at first level

Now, I also know that you only get this benefit 1 time; regardless of how many other classes you take.

For example: A character starts out as a sorcerer; as such, he/she gets (2+INT mod)*4 for her/his first level. That character then gains enough EXP to advance to level 2, but, instead of taking another sorceror level, the character gains a level of fighter. However, that character only gets 2+INT mod for his/her level of fighter; not 4 times that amount. I know this, and most other people do as well.

So, what is my question?

Well, my question is concerning monsters with multiple hit dice. They start with X amount of "levels" in whatever type of creature they are.

For example: The Skullcrusher Ogre has 8 hit dice; it starts with 11*(2+Int mod) skill points.

Now, let's say that a player named Larry decides to use a skullcrusher ogre as the race for his next character. Larry decides that his ogre is going to be a fighter; as such, Larry tacks on one level of fighter. This is where my question arises from.

Does Larry get the fighter skill points of (2+INT mod)*4 since it is his first class level?

or

Does Larry get the fighter skill points of 2+INT mod since -even though it is his first fighter level- his character already had "8 levels" in Skullcrusher Ogre (the 8 hit dice)?

That's the correct one.

That's the correct one.

Thanks...

That's the way I have been doing it, but (recently) I had started to become unsure.

Assumptions in this post:

Skullcrusher ogres are <Giants>
Skullcrusher ogre PCs start with <Giant> HD, rather than being a purely +LA race

If those assumptions are correct, the first level of fighter would give the PC 2 + Int skill points.

The character's first "level" (a.k.a HD) was in <Giant>, and his skill points for that level would be (2 + Int)*4

The rules say that, if the monster has "racial hit dices" he already took "x4 skill point" for the first racial HD and do not take other "x4 skill point" for his 1st class level

Also, characters with "monster levels" (i.e. hit dice) treat the skills that appear in the MM entry as class skills.

Also, characters with "monster levels" (i.e. hit dice) treat the skills that appear in the MM entry as class skills.

You left out: For the skill points they get as a result of their Hit Dice.

If they take levels of say Fighter, they are still cross-class skills for Fighter. This means they still cost x2 for the Fighter levels.

Their max ranks will still be full cause they have at least one HD of the monster 'class' that has it as a class skill.
