| Lunas_Argent07-18-07, 11:23 AM | Ive come up with a feat that works like monkey grip on weapons of the characters size category. IE, a medium sized character could wield a medium sized one-handed weapon like a light weapon and a two-handed wapon like a one-handed weapon, its prereqs are monkey grip and a BAB+3. What would be some good ideas for a name for this feat? |
| tarkin07-18-07, 11:56 AM | Grip of the Octopus. |
| KoraktheBarbarin07-18-07, 12:11 PM | How about: Heroic Grasp or Hero's Grip:) |
| Dalthbar07-18-07, 12:15 PM | I'm somewhat partial to "Big Fat Hands" or "Gimungous Grasp". |
| J_Vhad07-18-07, 12:15 PM | Super Anime Munchkin Grip As a side note 3.0 monkey grip worked kind of like this, except it was limited to two-handed weapons one handed. We still use it in my game (having renamed it to Weapon Grip), but we don't allow it to stack with Monkey Grip. Some things you may want to consider though, is how this will interact power attack and weapon finesse. Is the one-handed weapon ALWAYS treated like a light weapon or only when beneficial. If it is always, it can't be powerattacked with. Would it be treated as a light weapon for finesse purposes? This effectively onpens all one handed weapons up to finesse. Another side note, why require Monkey Grip when it only works on weapons of your size? Doesn't make sense to me on a logic level *(not that all D&D does, just wondering). |
| Spikes01k07-18-07, 01:36 PM | I personally wouldn't allow it because that would cercomvet exotic weapon proficiency Bastard Sword. They would be able to wield a bastard sword one handed unless they receive some sort of minus to hit. I would much rather just change monkey grip to work better. Here is my version. Monkey Grip Preq: Str 15, Base attack bonus +4, Power Attack You may wield weapons one size larger than normal as they were intended to be used. So a large one handed weapon may be used with only one hand; however you still inquire a -1 to hit. Alternatively you my wield a weapon one size larger one handed weapon, two handed, with no minuses. You may wield a weapon one size larger in both hands with this feat. |

I suppose I could house-rule that monkey grip can be applied to weapons the same size category as the characters, or let the characters choose upon choosing the feat whether to apply it to same sized or larger sized weapons, making them have to burn up 2 feats to be able to do both, but I wanted it to represent more how a person who has trained using larger sized melee weapons has brought that training home to weapons of his own size category. Essentially it brings monkey grip down one size category, a medium character uses mediumsized weapons as if they were small sized. You still recieve the same penalty as for monkey grip.(I.E. the penalty for using weapons one size difference). I personally wouldn't allow it because that would cercomvet exotic weapon proficiency Bastard Sword. They would be able to wield a bastard sword one handed unless they receive some sort of minus to hit. Yes, a person with this feat would be allowed to use a bastard sword one-handed w/out the exotic weapon prof. feat for it, and a one-handed great sword, too. ???? Grip (?) Due to your experience with larger weapons, you can use weapons sized for you as if they were one size smaller Prerequisites:Base attack bonus +3, monkey grip Benefit:You may use weapons sized for your size category as being one size lighter but you still recieve the same penalty for the effort it takes to use a larger weapon. You may change the grip on your weapon so as to not incur the penalty. Doing so is a free action with a one-handed weapon and a move action with a two-handed weapon, neither of which provoke an attack of opportunity. Normal:You may only use weapons of your size category at their original size. Special:A person with the Weapon Finesse feat may treat any one-handed weapon as a light weapon as long as they are using it as a light weapon. If they are using it as a one-handed weapon or use both hands, they may not apply weapon finesse. A person with power attack does not double the points taken from their attack roll when using a two-handed weapon with one hand. |

Wield oversized weapon, it lets you apply mnkey grip to any sized weapon and reduces the penalty for using larger weapons, this doesnt reduce the penalty and doesnt let you use weapons of larger size than monkey grip, it just lets you run around wielding two regular sized greatswords, screaming your head off like a madman,or maybe thats just me. So, anyone else got any name ideas? So far we have Grip of the Octopus, Heroic Grasp, Hero's Grip, "Big Fat Hands" and "Gimungous Grasp" Im kinda partial to KoraktheBarbarins ideas, heroic grasp or heroe's grip. I was thinking also Gorilla Grip. |

| J_Vhad07-19-07, 12:05 PM | I'm still a bit confused with what you are trying to do. Are you making the weapons treated as one category lighter effort wise, or treating them as one size smaller? How is this any different than monkey grip really? So you can wield two medium greatswords each in one hand. It's mechanically the same as wielding two longswords with monkey grip. Am I just missing something? |
| Spikes01k07-19-07, 12:23 PM | Yes, a person with this feat would be allowed to use a bastard sword one-handed w/out the exotic weapon prof. feat for it, and a one-handed great sword, too. Then, unless you place the untrained minuses on using it untrained then this feat would be overly powered and broken. If they are using it as a one-handed weapon or use both hands, they may not apply weapon finesse. A person with power attack does not double the points taken from their attack roll when using a two-handed weapon with one hand. Ok this might work, as an expansion of monkey grip. |
| Lunas_Argent07-19-07, 08:45 PM | I'm still a bit confused with what you are trying to do. Are you making the weapons treated as one category lighter effort wise, or treating them as one size smaller? Essentially, its the same thing, it depends on which end you look at it from. Monkey grip lets you treat larger weapons as one size smaller (at a penalty for using mis-sized weapons), which lets you treat them as one size lighter How is this any different than monkey grip really? So you can wield two medium greatswords each in one hand. It's mechanically the same as wielding two longswords with monkey grip. Am I just missing something? A medium sized person with a shield and wielding a medium sized great sword one-handed can, as a move action, drop their shield and switch to using it two-handed, therefore he can use the same weapon as an oversized weapon with a penalty or use it normally at no penalty. If they have cleave or multiple attacks per round, one could use a one-handed weapon like a light weapon on one enemy and switch to use it like a normal one handed weapon on the next. I am currently working on a feat that would allow you to change your grip on two-handed weapons (from one-handed to two-handed or vice versa) as a free action instead of a move action. |
| Lunas_Argent07-19-07, 09:00 PM | New Feat Switch Grip You can change your grip on your weapon faster Prerequisites:BAB+5, Monkey Grip, (??? Grip?) Benefit:When using (??? Grip?), you can switch your grip on two-handed weapons as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. Normal:Without this feat, switching grip on a two-handed weapon requires a move action. Special:Both hands must be empty to switch to a two-handed grip, anything that may not be dropped or removed from the hand not holding the weapon as a free action keeps you from using this feat during that round or until the object is removed. |
