It's in the "Book of Exalted Deeds", you forsake material goods for internal reslove. You must make a sacred vow to reach this state of being. As you journey to better yourself you can only the pious of equipment and food for your travels. You must give your other material goods away to benefit other less fortunate than you. As reach higher in your goal you will able to deflect blow of others and survive in condition other can't. You be even be above such restrictions as food. It a long and hard journey but for a few it maybe worth it.

For a monk...flavorful yes worth it...maybe it's not bad.

From the optimimization point of veiw, the Vow of Poverty (VoP) is very broken. In real game play, if you are like the thousands of other gamers out there that don't optimize, then it is a nice choice for a good Monk to have.

However, no one can legally give you the actual game mechanics of it, as it is not OGL. So, if you can't access the book, you can't use it.

Basically, though, you have to take a certian feat from the Book of Exalted Deeds, and this allows you to gain all the benefits of the VoP. It is a poor way for most classes to compensate for the lack of magic items. The Monk, however, gains more than it loses from having it as opposed to having the magic items.
