| xpochian07-15-07, 04:21 PM | hello all, it's been a month or so since we last played, but we're getting back into it and i had a question about identifying items. i seem to recall, but i do not know from where, that either by using knowledge arcana, spellcraft or use magic device, that one could actually identify an item with an exceptionally good check, something in the neighbourhood of like 10 or 15 points higher than the DC to 'recall' some information about the item in question. kinda like DC 22 needed to activate a wand, but if you somehow hit a DC 32, you'd be told exactaly what the wand was, as if you identified it. anyone tell me where this might've come from, or what book/article it was in? thanks! |

Search the website, actually ... I remember reading that, too. |

(http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sg/20051125a) i specifically recall it having to do with a well rolled UMD check, but again, i've nothing to back it up with. |

I recall you can make a UMD check to 'blind activate' an item, though it may not always be a good idea. |
