Benefit: The owner of this feat can learn a number of derived spells equal to 1+cha modifier in addition to his spells normally known. The spells can be of any level but must be a derivative from another spell the character already knows. Example: -invisibility (sor/wiz 2) is a derivation from greater invisibility (sor/wiz 4). Both spells are derivations from superior invisibility (sor/wiz 9). -Summon monster III is a derived spell from summon monster IV, V, VI, VII, IX, but not from summon monster I or II. In short, a derivative spell is a lower level variant of another spell which has roughly the same purpose but is less powerfull. Also if oftens shares a simular name. At each level up the character is allowed to change 1 spell from his derived spells known in addition to the spells known he can normally swap at level up. The character may freely swap spells from his spells known to his derived spells known at level up. Example: Henneth, a sorceror 15 selects the Derived spell knowledge feat. Since Henneth has a charisma of 15. He can select 3 derived spells to his derived spells known list. From his sorceror spells known henneth knows spells like summon monster IV, greater blink and mass bulls strenght. Because henneth knows these spells he could select blink, bull strenght and any summon monster spell from I-III has his derived spells known. Example: Timber, a sorceror 5 has earned enough xp to level to sorceror 6. Timber knows the spell mage armor, uses it often, but sometimes wants an extra buff to his armor. Therefore greater mage armor would be a great option. However greater mage armor has expensive material components and Timber wouldnt like to use it all the time. But keeping both mage armor and greater mage armor is expensive in terms of the limited spells he knows. Therefore Timber chooses the feat Derived spell knowledge. As timber levels up Timber chooses the spell greater mage armor as his 3rd level spell. Timber chooses mage armor as one of his derived spells known and chooses another for the mage armor spell the sorcerous spell known. idea As sorceror its quite diffucult to choose your spells known. Should i "upgrade" my summon monster III to summon monster IV? In some situations the one is better than the other, but you only have a limited number of known spells. This feat has been created to do away with these diffucult dilemma's without making the jack of all trades, just making it more flavorfull! The feats also works for other spontenous casters. I quickly understood what you meant by 'derived', but did not understand the limitations of changing them when you levelled up. Besides, I think the feat is powerfull enough for a Loose Game without the ability to change the derived spells. For these reasons, I would not let you change them, once taken. Otherwise it looks good. |
