| Mark_Aged07-30-07, 09:01 PM | Hey, I'm seeing if I can make a good feat, and I need your guys opinion. Here it is: Muscle Tentacles Muscles in your back have changed, mutated, grown their own mind, and increased in size. Eight two feet long muscles have thickened and grown right out of your back. They mostly act on their own, but can be told what to do. They're much stronger then normal muscles, but still aren't that powerful in combat. Prerequisite: Aberration Blood, two other Aberrant feats, Strength 17 or higher Benefit: You may give the tentacles any one object of any size to hold, so long as it is not over 50 lbs. This weight is still part of your Carrying Capacity. The tentacles can be used as a natural weapon (Muscle Tentacles (1d3)) if they aren't holding anything. For this attack, all 8 tentacles are used on one damage roll. You may not make multiple attacks with the tentacles. If you are prone, the tentacles can help you up faster. When you get up from the prone position, you don't provoke an attack of opportunity, but only if the tentacles aren't holding anything. Well? Suggestions? Ideas? Is it balanced, to powerful, to weak? Anything I should change? Know what might be a better name? |
| zorgling2507-30-07, 11:27 PM | Good concept, but IMO too powerful for something readily available at first level. Consider adding a couple more prerequisites. |
| Genetic07-30-07, 11:36 PM | I would add something like "two Aberrant feats" as another pre-requisite or something. |
| dknight10007-30-07, 11:52 PM | also, the free stand up thing if they're not holding anything pretty much duplicates a feat in itself (kip up or something), so you may want to take that into consideration. |
| BilopTheFleshwarper07-31-07, 02:06 AM | considering it's already more powerful that the other aberation feat that give you tentacles....it's too powerful. give it more prereqs, like say the other feat that gives you tentacles, and increase the strength required 15+, or 17+. |
| Mark_Aged07-31-07, 08:36 AM | Thanks for the suggestions, here's the new one. Muscle Tentacles Muscles in your back have changed, mutated, grow there own mind, and increased in size. Eight two feet long muscles have thickened and grown right out of your back. They mostly act on their own, but can be told what to do. They're much stronger then a normal muscles, but still aren't that powerful in combat. Prerequisite: Aberration Blood, two other Aberrant feats, Strength 17 or higher Benefit: You may give the tentacles any one object of any size to hold, so long as it is not over 50 lbs. This weight is still part of your Carrying Capacity. The tentacles can be used as a natural weapon (Muscle Tentacles -3 (2d4)) if they aren't holding anything. If you are prone, the tentacles can help you up faster. When you get up from the prone position, you don't provoke an attack of opportunity, buy only if the tentacles aren't holding anything. |
| Cindre200007-31-07, 10:26 AM | Prerequisite: Aberration Blood, two other Aberrant feats, Strength 18 or higher Ability score prerequisites are always an odd number. Make it 17. |
| Mark_Aged07-31-07, 10:56 AM | Really? Okay, 17. Is it good now? |
| tarkin07-31-07, 11:25 AM | And the damage is way off. Look at natural attacks for Medium sized creatures. Slam attacks and claws are 1d3 or 1d4. In the MM, the only medium sized abberation with a tentacle is the Grick, which is 1d4 base damage (+2 for strength) http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/grick.htm |
| Mark_Aged07-31-07, 12:37 PM | Your right, should I change it to 1d3, 1d2, or just 1 damage? |
| tarkin07-31-07, 01:17 PM | Hm. I just realized you have Eight of them. Can you say SNEAK ATTACK of total destruction? Can you say instant death from flanking? Honestly, if you even allow a single 1 pt of damage, every rogue in the world will be abusing this feat. Strict/Loose Game: no damage whatsoever, they can not be used as a natural weapon nor can they be used to wield a weapon. Power Game: They can each do one point of non-lethal damage. Any Sneak attack damage would also be non-lethal. They can not wield a weapon. |
| Cindre200007-31-07, 04:12 PM | First, limit the number off tentacles that can attack any one opponent. Next, have them do 1d2 subdual (they can do normal damage only if you are proficient). Finally, require the player to use the multiattack feats (found in the MM) to use the tentacles. |
| tarkin07-31-07, 05:32 PM | Or you could make it even wierder and declare them to be something like: 1. a single non-precision attack. (sneak attack damage received once, not 8 times) 2. that can target upto 8 creatures. 3. Must to damage (no 8 attempts to trip/sunder/grapple) |
| celloshane07-31-07, 09:17 PM | Hm. I just realized you have Eight of them. Can you say SNEAK ATTACK of total destruction? Can you say instant death from flanking? Any Sneak attack damage would also be non-lethal. They can not wield a weapon. It's written a little clunky but as I understood it, the tentacles could only make one attack, not 8. As I interpret it, they could however hold 8 items. |
| Mark_Aged08-01-07, 11:12 AM | Yes, the tentacles can only make one attack, not 8. They act as one, not eight. They can only hold one item, not 8. And remember, they are only two-feet long, so when they hold something, they can only hold it, not use it. So, how does one attack for all 8 tentacles, doing 1d3 lethal damage, at -3 on the attack roll, due to the fact that they're only two-feet long sound? |
| tarkin08-01-07, 11:32 AM | If the tentacles are all making a single attack, I see no problem with allowing the damage to be: 1d3 lethal damage, with no penalty to attack, beyond the normal penalty for using natural weapons (if using a real weapon and a natural weapon, the natural weapon is treated as a secondary attack and has a -5 penalty to hit) |
| Mark_Aged08-01-07, 05:51 PM | Okay, so, wrap up: Muscle Tentacles Muscles in your back have changed, mutated, grow there own mind, and increased in size. Eight two feet long muscles have thickened and grown right out of your back. They mostly act on their own, but can be told what to do. They're much stronger then a normal muscles, but still aren't that powerful in combat. If you are prone, the tentacles can help you up faster. When you get up from the prone position, you don't provoke an attack of opportunity, buy only if the tentacles aren't holding anything. Does that sound good then? |
| tarkin08-01-07, 05:59 PM | You need to specify that all 8 tentacles count as only one attack. As is, it is not obvious. |
| Mark_Aged08-01-07, 06:48 PM | Okay, so: Muscle Tentacles Muscles in your back have changed, mutated, grown their own mind, and increased in size.
