Mystical Spell

Pre-req: 3+ levels in a spontaneous casting class.

Benefit: When you choose this feat, select a class that has spontaneous casting level. This is your 'mystical' class. You have mastered mystical methods of casting spontaneous spells of this class, allowing you to occasionally cast a higher level spell than normal.

When you obtain an odd level of that 'mystical class', you learn a single extra spell of one level higher than you can normally learn/cast in that class. Note this spell is in effect learned early - when you legally learn your first spell of that level, it has already been learned (i.E. an Sorcoroer that took this feat would learn a 3rd level spell at 5th level, but no 3rd level spell at 6th level).

Once per week, regardless of your level, using a full round action or twice the normal casting time(whichever is greater), you may cast any spell of your "mystical class" you know, and it does not count for your spells/day.

This feat can never allow you to learn or cast a spell that a 20th level caster could not cast. A 19th level sorcorer with this feat knows two 9th level spells, no '10th level, and can cast them 4 times a day normally plus 1/week at double normal casting time. A 17th level bard with this feat knows three 6th level spells (no 7th), and can cast them 1/day plus 1/week at increased casting time.

Note, this feat DOES allow a caster to qualify for Prestige classes and other feats that have requirements of able to cast 3rd level spells.

Special: This feat may be taken multiple times. Each time select a different Mystical class.

Normal: Without this feat, your spell's known are as per the appropriate chart and you have no 1/week spells.

With respect to the leveling order, if you took this feat at level 3, you wouldn't get the benefit until level 5. You may wish to specify otherwise.

Also, this looks like a terrible trade.

You give up one spell known at each even level to gain it a level earlier but it's only cast-able once a week.

If this isn't your intention, you may need to do some rewording.

If you take it at level 3, you instantly gain the ability to cast one extra spell per week. That applies all the time.

You are not giving up anything. You are learning a spell one level earlier than normal. For this feat you get:

1. 1/week ability to cast a single extra spell of any level.
2. at odd levels, that 1/week spell may be one level higher than normal.
3. You gain the ability to join prestige classes one level earlier than normal.
4. You gain the ability to make certain magic items one level earlier than normal (and thus cheaper).

Well worth a feat.

Interesting idea as usual, tarkin.

This allows a trick I usually advise on doing using Versatile Spellcaster + Heighten Spell...

Anyhow, how long is Standard Action x 2? How about Swift x 2? Immediate x 2?
Just say Full-Round if less than that, or double (or even as usual) otherwise.

It's a handy little feat, and would also allow you to only cast as a 17th level Sorcerer while getting 9th level spells... But can't Kobolds already do that, but WAY better?

Also, crafting with this feat would take ages.

I see it as a wasted feat every even level. But I'm sorta being devil's advocate here.

No you don't.

The feat is worded "When you obtain a level..."

You technically obtain your 3rd level before your 3rd level feat.

I suggest you reword it to better reflect your intent.

You are not giving up anything. You are learning a spell one level earlier than normal. For this feat you get:

Good to see the wording now reflects that.

1. 1/week ability to cast a single extra spell of any level.

You should consider rewriting it to say "Once per week, you may cast any spell learned early with Mystical Spell as a full round action or twice the normal casting time (whichever is greater). This spell does not count toward your spells usable per day."

The whole "Mystical Class" business is unnecessary.

2. at odd levels, that 1/week spell may be one level higher than normal.

Once per week is a stupid limitation though.

Time is so abstracted in D&D, that may be awesome or useless.

D&D also doesn't ordinarily base anything on "per weak" since everything else is based on "per day" or "per encounter."

4. You gain the ability to make certain magic items one level earlier than normal (and thus cheaper).

Not really. You still need to meet the minimum caster level for the spell which doesn't change regardless of whether or not you take this feat.

Well worth a feat.

Dunno. Seems so-so to me.

By the way, your formatting is awful, you spelled Sorcerer wrong, and it's hard to tell where the feat ends your comments begin. :)

Consider something like this:

Oh by the way, your feat fails on its compatibility check with the Duskblade and any other spontaneous spellcasting class with a non-Sorcerer-like progression.
