Turtle fighting

Pre-req: Phalanx Fighting, Proficiency with a heavy shield, base attack bonus +2

Benefit: If you are using a heavy shield and have an ally also with a heavy shield who also has this feat, you may both choose to occupy the same space and still fight as if you were in the space alone. The only thing you can not do is use a two handed weapon while occupying the same square. No more than two people can occupy the same space, using this feat.

In addition, when Turtle Fighting, you give up the benefits of Phalanx Fighing, but instead get cover. This cover is 'hard cover', so it grants the +2 to reflex saves as well as the +4 to AC.

Anyone attempting an Over run must beat both turtle members

If one of the members are Bull rushed, they get a +4 bonus to resist bullrushing. If you suceed, you push him out of the space but also must make another bull rush attempt (this one is free) against his turtle buddy (without that +4 benefit).

Normal: Without this feat, you generally can not fight from the same square, or have severe penalties if squeezing.

I kind of like it.

However:
I see no reason to ban the use of a two-handed weapon. You already have to use a heavy shield to gain the benefit of this feat. Sure, you could wield a two-handed weapon if you had multiple arms... how often does that happen? :P

So what would happen if someone tries to bull rush or overrun one of the "turtles" in that shared square?

Since there's no facing, how would you determine who's "in front of" who and all that fun jazz?

I could see a couple of options, depending on how you look at it...

1: Turtle is seperate linked units: Check would be against on specific enemy, but I could see giving them a bonus ( +4 seems standard ) to resist the bull-rush due to their comrade's support.

2: Turtle is a single unit: Make a check against "The Turtle" which uses the lowest of the two checks but at +4 ( weakest link theory but with support )

Possible results...
Seperate Units: Success breaks the Turtle, and get a free bull-rush attempt against the 2nd mob, which no longer gets Turtle bonuses or support bonus, and if successful on bull rush check they can force angled movement so they don't end up in same square as their comrade again.
Failure to bull-rush this 2nd mob results in character and 2nd mob now sharing same square and suffer penalties until resolved.
( just an off hand idea )

Linked Units:
Success, Turtle is bull-rushed and all units of Turtle suffer affects. See above about possible need for one to be bull-rushed at an angle.

I like option #1. Will put it into the feat.

If I were to guess, I'd say it might have something to do with Animated shields... Tarkin?

I was thinking four handed creatures, but animated shields also works.

In either case, I think it should be too crowded to use a two handed weapon.
