Cheap Spell [Metamagic]

Prerequisite
Eschew Materials.

Benefit
A cheap spell uses less focus and material components than the original. Divide the price of the required focus and material components (if any) by 10. Should the price of a material component go below 1 gp, the cost counts as negligible (thus qualifying for feats like Eschew Materials). Unlike normal metamagic feats, this feat can be applied to the same spell more than once. The effects stack, so a spell that is cheapened twice requires only 1/100th of the normal components. A cheap spell uses up a spell slot two levels higher than the spell’s actual level.

=========================

Not really a serious proposition, but more of a 'proof of concept' kind of thing. I'm curious if this thing would be balanced. Good uses would be casting things like Raise Dead for 50 gp a shot.

1. I would not let it affect the Focus. If you only buy the cheaper focus then you could not cast the spell without using the feat, so in effect to save any money, you now become required to use the feat, otherwise you need to buy two focuses and the feat has in fact COST you money.

2. I would not let it stack. I see no reason to allow it to stack, and the interaction you describe means the 2nd use is FAR too powerful.

I would however let you create a feat called Greater Cheap Spell that was +6 levels, did not stack with Cheap Spell, but reduced to costs to 1/100 of normal.

The standard d&d rules on multiple multiplications is not to multiply them, but to add them.

Hence, if you had two consecutive divide by tens, I'd expect it to be equivalent to divide by 20, not divide by 100.

Still, way too powerful. has the potential for some serious abuse. I'd be happy if you couldn't stack the feat, but as it is? I'd never allow it.

I disagree with it stacking exponentially. Multiple reductions should stack linearly instead, in keeping with the tenets of dnd math.

So 2 cheap spells would reduce the material cost by a factor of 20, rather than 100. And so on and so forth.:)

Not sure about game balance though. It might be useful for casting spells in your downtime or something, when slots are not that important.

I would agree that 1/20 the price makes for a fair way to stack it.

If you want to stack the feat and get 1/20th the price, I would agree with that.

But I still dislike the idea of it working on Focuses.

I thought costly material components was a balancing factor for spells.

Removing the material component for a +2 or +3 adjustment probably wouldn't be game breaking. You might consider adjusting the level based on the cost of the material component.

Free Stoneskin spells for a 6th level spell slot isn't unreasonable imho.

Well, off course, you don't *need* to buy a cheaper focus. You can always buy a single normal (expensive) one, and use that for both Cheapened and normal spells ('this focus must cost [u]at least[/i] X gp' tells us the focus can be more expensive).

Sure, the feat is nice for those spells you cast in downtime. And you might want to use it in combination with item creation (normally you pay 100 times the material components, so it may be better to bump the spell up two levels and save some money on there. Your mileage may vary...). But in normal adventures, I don't think it's too much. I rather liked the thought of a sorcerer using it to cast an expensive spell after being captured.

When you combine this with Divine Metamagic, you can get True Rezz at 1/10th price?

Isn't that a bit broken? In my opinion it removes the threat of an encounter, when you can get True Rezzed for what 2500gp worth of Diamond dust?

I wouldn't allow this feat.

There is an Epic level feat that does away with material components all together.

Ignore Material Components [Epic]
Prerequisites

Eschew Materials, Spellcraft 25 ranks, ability to cast 9th-level arcane or divine spells.
Benefit

You may cast spells without any material components. This feat does not affect the need for a focus or divine focus.

I'm sure Divine Metamagic would require a seperate feat, and I have made no such thing. X becomming broken in combination with Divine Metamagic is more a problem of Divine Metamagic than of X.
