What do you guys think?

Fell Lifeleech [Metamagic]

You draw life force from foes damaged by your spell.
Benefits: You can alter a spell with the death descriptor and which deals damage to foes. For every 10 points of damage the spell deals in a given round, you are healed of 1 point of damage, but this healing does not allow you to exceed your full hit point total. A fell lifeleeched spell uses a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level.

Fell Spawn [Metamagic]

Living foes slain by your spell may rise as spawn.
Prerequisite: Create Spawn.
Benefits: You can alter a spell that deals damage to foes. Any living creature that could normally be made into one of your spawn, when slain outright by a fell spawned spell, rises as one of your spawn some time after (see the entry for your type of undead in the Monster Manual to find out when and under what conditions it will rise). A fell spawned spell uses a spell slot four levels higher than the spell’s actual level.

Fell Lifeleech should only work for a single targetted creature.

Otherwise:

I fell Lifeleech Fireball a group of 15 halflings, each take 10 points, I gain 15 hitpoints.

Most death descriptor spells inflict damage within a radius, thus potentially affect multiple targets.

How would you word the change to make it approriate?

Method 1:

Admit that your idea is far more powerfull than you thought and raise it to +4 level cost. Realize that people will pretty much only cast it on area attacks and other spells that target multiple creatures.

Method 2:

Change it to only work on spells that target a single creature. Yes, this will seriously decrease the number of spells, but it becomes fair.

--------

Additional Problem: Many of the [Death] Spells do not do hitpoint damage.

Instead they say things like "Kills a creature with 100 hitpoints or less Save negates".

Those things do NO hitpoint damage, they just kill a creature (similar to a Stone to Flesh spell - it does no hitpoint damage, it just turns you to stone).

You might want to make it:

Heals you 10 hitpoints for every creature you kill with that spell, +1 level cost.

It is.

Option A: How about making it "You can alter a spell from the necromancy school and which deals damage to a single foe."

It's limiting, yet takes from a broader pool of spells.

Or:

Otpion B: "You can alter a spell from the necromancy school and which deals damage to foes. For every 10 points of damage the spell deals in a given round, you are healed of 1 point of damage, but this healing does not allow you to exceed your full hit point total. If the spell inflicts damage to more than one target, the target taking the most damage determines for how many points of damage you are healed. A fell lifeleeched spell uses a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level."

Option C: Same wording as originally, but make it necromancy spells, and change the spell slot to 4, like you suggested.

[...]

You might want to make it:

How about:

You draw life force from foes killed by your spell.
Benefits: You can alter a spell with the death descriptor and which kills or deals damage to foes. For every living creature killed by the spell in a given round, you are healed of 1d6 points of damage, but this healing does not allow you to exceed your full hit point total. A fell lifeleeched spell uses a spell slot X level higher than the spell’s actual level.

I made the amount of healing correspond to the die chosen for the Profane Lifeleech feat in Libris Mortis. What of the slot level for this version?

Allow saving throws for 'no saves' or bonuses. Be careful with the math. An area effect that can draw d6 per kill, regardless of target being Cr1 or CR 20, is ripe for abuse. But I LIKE it!

Profane Lifeleech, from Libris Mortis, inflicts 1d6 per target within 30 ft. radius, and heals same amount to caster. The cost: 2 turning attempts.
So the feat user is healed without actually having to kill the targets.

Unless I'm mistaken, Profane Lifeleech should be the benchmark from which my feat ought to be compared to.

Glad you like the attempt! It naggged me of late to find a way for a spellcaster to get healed from inflicting damage unto others, and there was no mechanic I knew of that covered it.

Yeah im liking these feats, im a heavy user of fell magic, my favorite sorc build involves force missle mage, argent savant and fell magic with arcane thesis (magic Missle) to make your lvl 1 spell do as much as a fire ball and some lvl loss.

So you have to kill the target to gain life, but it has to be a death spell and its not a huge amount of HP, though for a wizard its a good amount, id day its should be a +2, or a +1 with a prereq or two

I agree the last version seems to be good enough to work. Preliminarily, of course.

The beauty shot looks like this. The choice of three spell slots is to equal that of Fell Animate, one official fell feat that requires the caster to kill the target for the feat to even have an effect:

Fell Lifeleech [Metamagic]
You draw life force from foes killed by your spell.
Benefits: You can alter a spell with the death descriptor and which kills or deals damage to foes. For every living creature killed by the spell in a given round, you are healed of 1d6 points of damage, but this healing does not allow you to exceed your full hit point total. A fell lifeleeched spell uses a spell slot three levels higher than the spell’s actual level.

That feet definitely looks acceptable to me, even a bit weak.

What would you propose, Tarkin?

You are only gaining 1d6 hitpoints for every creature killed.

I could easily see making that a +1 level cost, not +3.

Cool! +1 it is.
Any comments on Fell Spawn? It seemed like such an obvious idea I was surprised Libris Mortis did not latch onto it.
