| texanhick2004-08-07, 08:33 PM | Little bit of background I'm playing in an arabian game as a Sha'ir from the Dragon Magazine Compendium. I took the extra familiar 3 times, so I have a fire gen, water gen, earth gen, and air gen familiar. the majority of my spells are thematic. Rainbow blast, Rainbow Ray, Prismatic Mist, Prismatic Touch (home brew spell) Prismatic Ray, etc. From 3rd level to 6th I have a prismatic spell, and rainbow spells of one sort or another. I've also gone the Initate of the Seven fold veil, and on top of /that/ I have three of the 7 veils out of the magic item compendium. (noticeing the trend here?) I'm wanting to make a reserve feat based off this theme of my character. Here's the base feat I'm going off of. Firey Burst (reserve) You channel your magical talent into a blast of fire. Prerequisite: Ability to cast 2nd-level spells. Benefit: As long as you have a fire spell of 2nd level or higher available to cast you can spend a standard action to create a 5-foot-radius-burst of fire at a range of 30 feet. This burst deals 1d6 points of fire damage per level of the highest-level fire spell you have availale to cast. A successful reflex save halves the damage. As a secondary benefit, you gain a +1 compentence bonus to your caster level when casting fire spells. Rainbow Burst (Reserve) You channel your magical talent into a blast of chaotic energy. Prerequisite: Ability to cast 3rd-level spells. Benefit: As long as you have a spell that does all four types of elemental damage of 3rd level or higher available to cast, you can spend a standard action to create a 5-foot-radius-burst of elemental energy at a range of 30 feet. This burst deals 1d2 points of each elemental damage per two levels (rounded down) of the highest-level spell you have available to cast. A successful reflex save halves the damae. (no secondary benifit.) For the first feat, useing a 6th level spell, you could do 6d6 points of damage for an average damage total of..21 points of fire damage, reflex save for half. For my feat, useing a 6th level spell, you would do 12d2 of damage of every element for an average damage total of 18 reflex save for half.... Another writeup I have for the feat is as follows.. Roll on the chart below, this burst deals 1d4 points of the element rolled in damage per level of the highest-level spell you have available to cast. A successful reflex save halves the damage. (no secondary benifit.) 1d8 Color Damage Type 1 Red Fire 2 Orange Acid 3 Yellow Electricity 4 Green Poison 5 Blue Cold 6 Indigo Sonic 7 Violet Force 8 Multihued Roll twice, Ignore further results of 8 blast is 50% of each roll Average damage for this one would be 15 points of a random energy type |

You mean one single spell that does all four types, one spell that could do any of the four types (like prismatic spray), or any combination of spells that does all four types? The first version seems balanced OK, but rolling a zillion 1d2s would be pretty annoying. The second version seems more in line with your theme, but "posion" is not a damage type. You could do something like this but model it more closely on the prismatic spells. You could require a spell with "prismatic" in its name as the reserve requirement, and then roll randomly for an effect, like: 1 Red 1d6 points fire damage per reserve level (Reflex half) 2 Orange 1d6 points acid damage per reserve level (Reflex half) 3 Yellow 1d6 points electricity damage per reserve level (Reflex half) 4 Green Poison (primary & secondary: 1 pt Con per reserve level) 5 Blue 1d6 points cold damage per reserve level (Reflex half) 6 Indigo Target confused for one round per reserve level (Will negates) 7 Violet Target teleports 10 ft per reserve level in a random direction, as dimension door (Will negates) 8 Two colors; roll twice more, ignoring any “8” results. |

Spells like Rainbow beam (which I just noticed was a 2nd level spell) Rainbow blast, Prismatic (insert effect) another spell is one called Energy spheres, you throw 4 marbles up in the air and they start floating like ioun stones and they do one of two things, you can have them absorb elemental damage, and when X amount of a type is absorbed the colored ball associated with the element vanishes, or you can have it attack as a touch attack, doing X amount of damage and then vanishing. Spells like this would fall under the feat's description. |
