hello

special ability level 7 ninja: Speed Climb

A ninja of 7th level can scramble up or down walls and slopes with great speed. She can climb her speed as a move action with no penalty; however, she must begin and end the round on hoizontal surface or fall. (taking normal falling damage)
A ninja needs only one free hand to use this ability. And wear no armor or more than light stuff total.

question: can she always climb walls at move speed, or does she have to make a climb-check as normal? with other words...is this special ability meant to only increase speed or make walls a no obstacle altogether?

Yes, you do need to still make skill checks. That ability just negates the climb speed listed in the Climb skill entry. If you succeed your check, you climb at your normal walking speed so long as you reach the top within one turn. So, a halfling could climb a 20 foot wall, and a human a 30 foot wall on a successful check.

On what (DM?) rule is this based? I also opened this thread in 'classes and prestige classes', since I wasn't sure where to put it. plz respond in 'classes' where this thread will be continued. Already got an answer there that has a different view on this :>)

Seems to me that you should use the normal climb rules, except where the ability changes them. The ability changes the climbing speed, but doesn't say anything about climb checks. So make climb checks as normal.

Further evidence: "She can climb her speed as a move action with no penalty." I would assume that means no penalty to her climb check. If there's no check, what penalty would they be referring to?

Losing DEX bonus, having to make a climb check or fall if he's hit...

Speed Climb is a Ninja-Specific ability that they acquire at level 7. The ninja is allowed to climb at their full movement rate instead of the reduced pace as normal. The ninja is still subject to all other applicable rules and ability checks to climb, as well as the other rules specified by Speed Climb.

Please let me know if you have any further questions!

I guess I have to buy the skilltrick 'walk the walls' and run up that wall this way. (see thread at classes and prestige classes)
