Noob needs help understanding Maximize [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-24-07, 06:23 AM Lets say a 3rd lvl Sorcerer takes the Maximize Spell feat....how can he cast a 2nd level spell maximized and use a 5th level spell slot when he doesn't have 5th level spells yet?

Nope. As a 5th lvl wizard, he could maximize a 0-level spell like Acid Splash.

03-24-07, 11:28 AM Why would you? 5d6 fireball, or 3 damage acid splash. THe fireball will do a minimum of 2 damage if they make the save, and minimum 5 otherwise. That's still higher than the acid splash.

No errata. It's been +3 for the entire 3.5 period, at least.

Yup. It was an example, nothing more. Probably the earliest decent use you could get out of it is as a 7th lvl wizard doing a Maximized Magic Missile for 20 damage.

03-25-07, 03:35 AM Well, in theory, the only reason I can think of as to why you would want to maximize a cantrip would be if you somehow had your int drained all the way to 10 and could not yet access restoration....:P

So in theory, it is not without its purpose. But what are the odds of that happening...:embarrass

03-25-07, 07:01 AM The other point being missed is that it can be worth taking some feats before they are particularly useful. If I figure that I'm going to want Maximize some time in the near future and have nothing more pressing to spend the feat slot on, then I take it now.
