I was wonderin I keep hearing about this redonculus (not a spelling mistake just my way of saying how crazy it is) feat called persist spell which aparently allows a spell with a time limit (rounds/minutes/hours) to go for 24 hours. I regularily hear it paired with the Divine meta-magic feat I was just wondering what book it is from.

Which one? DMM or Persist? DMM:CD Persist:CArc. And don't let people fool you, it's not that powerful. It's really great, but there is a spell called Dispel Magic. And it does require a +6 spell level adjustment, and without Nightsticks it's not that viable to get more than even two DMM persists, which cost 7 turn attempts each.

and excuse my ignorance but what is a nightstick?

Here's the breakdown as I understand it:

Persist Spell is a meta-magic feat that lets you extend a spell to a 24 hour duration. It also cost something like 6 extra spell levels

Divine Metamagic lets you spend turn attempts to reduce the metamagic cost of applying a metamagic feat.

Nightsticks give you extra turn attempts per day.

As a result of these 2 feats and 1 item you have clerics running around with insane buffs all day. Though as said, Dispel Magic can screw that up.

I don't see how dispel magic comes into play when a character uses DMM: Quicken to drop 3 [spells of their highest level] in a round.

Its cheese. Ban it.

Cleric: "I'm all buffed up!"
Foe: *dispel magic*
Cleric: "CRAP!"

Like that. DMM isn't bad by itself, it's the presence of Nightsticks (which are cheap and provide the metric buttloads of turning attempts to burn. Just ban Nightsticks (or don't let them stack with themselves and/or Extra Turning) and it's pretty reasonable.

My subDMPC (A DMPC that the players control, should call it a subPC) only uses DMM cheese for Maximized Flame strikes (BTW in my campain DMM is a stand alone feat, but hey 3 maximizes a day for two feats, also had Extra Turning).

DMM Quicken is bad. Oh, and how are you getting three spells per round? DMM Persist is all fine. I have seen DMM Quicken in action, and it was mean. A Horrid Wilting followed by an Avascular Mass really hurt the party. Stupid Blighter and his Dread Necromancer friend.

If the DM introduces nightsticks into a campaign where he also allows DMM then he's more or less getting what he's asking for.

DMM appears to really only be a problem with Persist.
DMM: Quicken doesn't get around the 1/quicken a round and given the Turn cost of using it, all you are really getting is a spell caster burning through their spells all the faster.

You "dispel magic" a DMM:Q Flamestrike with a "counter spell" action.

I've got a favoured soul I'd like to give Persistent Spell to, but he ain't gettin' that till Epic and it'll cost him an Increased Spell Capacity, too. Just enough for Divine Power, and I believe he should have atleast two spell slots with his Wis/Cha (whichever it was), just incase he gets hit with Dispel Magic.

..'course if he gets hit it with it again, well, he can atleast fly away. XD
dman11235

Yeah, he did it in that order. Luckily I was the cleric and I was playing a protection RSoP. I did not fail my save. And one mass cure serious later we were all fine. I love my RSoP. But the point still stands: quicken is worse than persist. Unless you can find a way to persist a really high aura of damage, like Wings of Flurry, but with a duration...

I've noticed that even without DMM, Persistant spell can be handy on a few spells. There are particularly spells that are cast as a swift action and normally only usable for one round. I know that Persist Spell works with Wraithstrike as an 8th level slot. For a good gish type, that would be totally worth an 8th level spell. All of my attacks are touch attacks for the entire day? Sure! Power Attack away!

I'd have to re-read my Spell Compendium to see if Rhino Rush would work with Persistant Spell. If it does, that would totally be worth a 7th level slot. All of your charges that day do double damage.

Dispel Magic was mentioned because the OP was originally talking about DMM used with Persistant Spell. You're right in that it wouldn't do anything against DMM(Quicken Spell).

Still, I'm curious how you manage to cast three spells per round, when Quicken Spell can only be used once per turn. Are you also shapechanging into a choker?

Persistent Consumptive Field. Is this as nasty as I think it is? And if it is this nasty, what would be a reasonable curb to its power (beside banning it outright)?

I want to use this for a BBEG, but my gosh I've calculated that after an hour of sacrifices, the BBEG could have 196d8 temporary h.p. 196 x 2 bonus to strength, and 196 caster levels (equaling a +196 bonus on any Dispel Check).

Tell me I'm missing something, lol.

1. you missed the part of if the creature makes its save, it becomes immune to that casting.

2. you missed the part about it gaining caster levels upto half of its original caster level.

3. dispel magic makes it go away.

4. creatures have to die from this spell for it to give the bonus, "sacrificing" them while in the aura will not give the bonus (unless, you mean beating them to near death, then letting the field do its job, hopefully)

a better bbeg would be a level 22 evil as heck half-elf with Permanent Emanation (Greater Consumptive Field)

1. you missed the part of if the creature makes its save, it becomes immune to that casting.

Yes, but if you're sacrificing creatures with increadibly poor will saves, then it's a non-issue. Even if they made their saves half the time, that means my example isn't 196, but 88d8 hp, 88x2 Strength bonus.

2. you missed the part about it gaining caster levels upto half of its original caster level.

3. dispel magic makes it go away.

Yes, I guess I did miss that despite reading it three times, lol. However, the Dispel becomes difficult since the caster level is raised. So instead of roughly a 50% dispel chance, it becomes 25%. Note, this is for Dispel, not Greater Dispel. I'm assuming levels of 10 or less.

4. creatures have to die from this spell for it to give the bonus, "sacrificing" them while in the aura will not give the bonus (unless, you mean beating them to near death, then letting the field do its job, hopefully)

That is exactly what the Evil dude intends to do with the help of his minions. Funneling the commoners into a sacrificial chamber, and draining their blood would do the trick.

a better bbeg would be a level 22 evil as heck half-elf with Permanent Emanation (Greater Consumptive Field)

This particular BBEG isn't that high level. I'm talking ECL10 here.

Also, having looked at the description again, it says that the caster level increase can't effect the duration of THIS spell, meaning the one in effect. However, could you wait 23 hours 59 minutes, and then cast your second DMM (persistent) Consumptive Field that you've prepared at your new caster level, thus increasing the difficulty of Dispelling the second field? And creating a feedback loop nonetheless if you continue to alternate these spells over days?

04-18-08, 01:29 AM
The problem with relying on Dispel Magic is twfold. First of all, it forces the enemy to spend a round attempting a dispel that may or may not work. Second, you're stuck always using casters against the PCs. That cuts down on a lot of variety.
dman11235

04-18-08, 08:54 AM
Ah, but the one time per day of the four encounters that dispels it means the PC no longer has it the rest of the day. It's not being dispelled in every combat you know... Also, I think spending three feats and a load of turn attempts and the only thing you get out of it is forcing the enemy to "waste" a turn and a spell is not a very good trade at all.

Strucking: Planning domain gets you extend for free--->persist, DMM persist, Fell Animate, Corpsecrafter, Leadership is just five feats. That's level 12, 9 if human. Hmm, go into Thrallherd maybe and get a second cohort (or just have a friend) be a Hexblade or something like a Demon of possession and have him lower all saves in the area a LOT, and then just drop a flamestrike or two on the party. Watch them fight their own undead comrades, who even got a large boost in power thanks to Corpsecrafter! Then go into town and eat babies.

you're not thinking 3 dimensionally and spatially. Rats, Mice, Ticks, Fleas, Flies, Earthworms, Dogs, Cats, Voles, Moles, Deer, Moose, Cows, Chickens, Geese, Horses, Old Cat-ladies, Birds, Spiders, Beetles, Cockroaches -> all have at least 1 hitpoint and are (imo) considered creatures. How many of these do you think exist at any one point, at any one time frame, in a standard village; all within range of the evil cleric's Consumptive Field or Greater Consumptive Field?

My current chara is a Assamir cleric of Herionious. We are in a evil infested city where the "police" are corpse eating monks. the city is actually run by 7 different factions, from Yuan-ti counterfiters to pirates trying to destroy the world.
I have the DMM Persist, with night sticks, and use it every day. My DM actually commended me on using different sources and money to attain the bonuses. One of the persisted spells is Elation (from exalted deeds). it is a mass spell, so it helps the whole party.

The problems:
I am large size because of Rightous Might. I am distinctive (assamir, golden dragonrider armor) SO.... I stand out like a thumb. I am the first target in every fight.

My solution: hat of disguise. However it doesnt work all the time.

As said above, dispel magic. (and greater dispel magic)

My solution: greater ring of counterspell (MIC) charged with greater dispel magic.

Just being large. Moving around in combat, through doors, etc. also we have 2 members of our party that teleport us around. I am asked often to drop the RM to make the teleport easier.

All in all it is fun to play. Just my 2 cp

I hate consumptive field with a passion. Not only can you get an absurd caster level boost, but the Str bonus technically isn't capped. Most annoying, in my mind, is that you can get the bonus from killing mindless creatures. What kind of flavor is that?

Still, I'm curious how you manage to cast three spells per round, when Quicken Spell can only be used once per turn. Are you also shapechanging into a choker?

I know that using the 2nd person singular is a common method of employing hypotheticals, but in this case its creeping me out.

I don't have any of the books. My friend tells me his character's 9th level cohort can drop three spells/round, but he's kind of a min/maxer who sometimes forgets important restrictions here and there. So, you're probably right, 3 spells/round is impossible, isn't it? (Maybe he's casting something off of an immediate action, I don't know).

My point is that nobody should be casting spells equivalent to higher than their character can cast for their level. I hate sudden feats for the same reason.

If you're an 11th level wizard/cleric, your maximum spell level is 6th. That means quickened mirror image/hold person is the best you can do, maximized fireball as well.

The fact is, these DMM feats and the sudden feats allow you not simply to economize on spell slot usage. It allows you to cast spells in a form that you could before. Spells that are equivalent to higher level spells. What rational individual, selecting feats to make the most powerful character, would not take such feats? Very few, under limited and special circumstances.

I ban the Sudden feats and DMM feats at my table outright. But I suppose another approach would be to limit DMM usage to your maximum spell slots available. I.e., no persistant divine power until you're a 15th level divine spell caster. Then the feat is no longer quite broken, but knocked down to the level of 'very powerful.'

Persist is pretty specific on what spell descriptors qualify, and the descriptors of Time Stop fit as written. In the last 3.0 FAQ, page 61.Assuming you are high enough level to cast a persistent time stop spell, could you use the virtual 24 hours the spell lasts to rest and recover your spells?
You can’t make time stop persistent. (Its duration is effectively instantaneous for purposes of the Persistent Spell feat.)The limits on what can or cannot be Persisted (no instantaneous spell, no touch range spell) are vital to preserve any semblance of balance for Persist Spell.
TheCobra

05-05-08, 04:36 PM
By the way, I think you can technically use multiple castings of consumptive field to boost your caster level to obscene heights. Start with CL 20, get CL 30. Cast again for CL 45. Etc. Cap the chain off with a persistent greater consumptive field.

I can hardly think of a way to make the spell balanced without changing it completely. Even if you limit the blatant abuse it's still amazing.
Sunic_Flames

05-05-08, 05:00 PM
Most likely, the 3 spells a round comes from celerity, arcane spellsurge, and similar effects. Combine with daze immunity of course.

With that said, Artificers can abuse it a lot better than clerics, though they won't get the uber dispel proof CLs. They can however persist extraordinary spell aimed AMFs so that their own magic works, but they're immune to anyone else's including dispels. In the meantime, rings of counterspelling.

The limits on what can or cannot be Persisted (no instantaneous spell, no touch range spell) are vital to preserve any semblance of balance for Persist Spell.

Where have I said otherwise? I am in favor of that limitation. The only contention is whether Time Stop is truly an instantaneous spell. Einstein may disagree with the FAQ. The FAQ is rife with inconsistancies itself, so while I look to it for guidance, I'm not entirely convinced. Why hasn't the errata been changed to reflect the FAQ's interpretation of Time Stop?

Persistent cheese aside, Time Stop gives you super speed, and doesn't really stop time. You are under the effects of the spell for 1d4 +1 rounds relative to you. Spells cast while in Time Stop expend rounds of duration as if cast normally -- so the magic of Time Stop is obviously NOT instantaneous.

As this pertains to Persist Metamagic, the FAQ answer seems like a knee-jerk interpretation. Heck, the DMM(Persist) Consumptive Field I pointed out earlier, and others elaborated on, is hella more powerful than a DMM(persist) Time Stop. Orders of magnitude more powerful. I see no FAQ or errata addressing that spell; probably because there isn't a convenient bit of hand waving available to make the problem go away (ie, let's just call Time Stop an instantaneous spell).

Having said that, I'm pointing these things out becase DMM(persist) is CHEESE.

I wouldn't got that far. Having an entire day to rearrange the battlefield to your desire is nuts in the right hands. Suddenly, your foes are surrounded by stone, metal, acid, and dimension lock. I'm not familiar with Consumptive Field, so I didn't comment on it. The first thing I check is always legality; unfortunately this one is Persistable.

Of the three benefits, one (the Str bonus) is simply not stackable, the second (temp hp) is likely to be a fleabite in terms of the amount of damage that can be dealt in a blow (even at 5th level); the third I would want to review the wording of. (That's easily the worst of the three.)

All creatures in the area with fewer than 0 hit points that fail their saving throws die, and you gain 1d8 temporary hit points and a +2 bonus to Strength for each death caused by this spell and until the spell’s duration expires. Except that the credibility of the source is in question. It is the same source that claims Teleportation spells transfer momentum (just to name one silly 'clarification'), a ruling that makes the DM's job exceedingly more difficult.

If Time Stop is indeed an instantaneous spell, then any spells you cast while in that state should not be penalized elapsed rounds for duration. The Sage is trying to have it both ways, which bothers the heck out of me.

Now would I create a house rule restricting persistent Time Stop (and Consumptive Field for that matter)? Most likely. But such a house rule feels no more or no less valid than the FAQ answer.

Of course WoTC could have clarified the issue with errata and made Time Stop's Duration: Instantaneous (special: d4+1 apparent). Or better yet since this was a 3.0 FAQ, it could have been entered into 3.5 printing. But it wasn't. Which begs the question why not? WoTC certainly errata'd other spells like Shapechange, even after 3.5 was released. Or placed a note in the Rules Compendium? To me it seems clear that they don't WANT to codify Time Stop as an instantaneous spell in the core rules. Why? I have no idea.

Worse yet.. you can rest during those 24 and reload your spells... the persistant timestop included !!!!

Perhaps accomplish some research, create a few new items etc.. all the middle of the heat of that one round ..a whole new set of epic spells and COMPLETELY rework the surroundings.
