| wizardguy200309-15-07, 12:02 AM | Persistent Spell is a feat in several books, Complete Arcane being the first that comes to mind. As to Nightsticks, check Libris Mortis. |
| NoldorForce09-15-07, 01:31 AM | I take it that you've heard an explanation of Divine Metamagic and was wondering what some of the suggested components were. |
| Rico_Huerta09-15-07, 12:31 PM | Yeah, I am actually trying to create a Cleric to be able to beat the others in my party(DM wants me to go evil and die, I would not mind going evil and LIVING :) ) |

| tarkin09-15-07, 08:44 PM | Persistent requires the DM to start throwing in many Dispell Magics. Either that or admit the characters are too powerfull. The real problem is that Persistent is (in my opinion) ALWAYS either: a. Not worth the level adjustments. b. Too powerfull because the guy got it without level adjustments. It is the only metamagic feat that by itself is more than +5 levels. What it needs is to be reduced down to +5 levels and throw in an XP cost. Maybe 300 xp. That puts a stop to most abuses, as people can still use it when it is important, but won't go crazy with it. |

Benefit: A persistent spell has a duration of 24 hours. The persistent spell must have a personal range or a fixed range. Spells of instantaneous duration cannot be affected by this feat, nor can spells whose effects are discharged. You need not concentrate on spells such as detect magic or detect thoughts to be aware of the mere presence of absence of the things detected, but you must still concentrate to gain additional information as normal. Concentration on such a spell is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. A persistent spell uses up a spell slot six levels higher than the spell’s actual level. |
| Tempest Stormwind09-15-07, 10:35 PM | Dispel Magic makes DMM Persistent not be too overpowered. I take it you haven't seen the other usual equipment a DMM Persister has besides a cathedralful of Nightsticks, then. Ever notice things like the Bead of Karma (from the Necklace of Prayer Beads; easy to buy on its own), the Ankh of Ascension (Originally from Magic of Faerun, the MIC nerfed it significantly but it's still useful), Incense of Meditation (DMG), and so on which provide significant temporary boosts to your caster level, but usually only function for divine casters and for a very brief window? Use that window to cast all your buff spells. Combining those with more permanent effects (ioun stones, for instance, or my personal favorite, Persistent (Greater) Consumptive Field) and your divine caster level for your persistent buffs is easily 10 or more higher than your actual caster level. A quick look at every dispel effect lesser than an Antimagic Field* or Mordenkainen's Disjunction shows that even if you're getting your full CL out of the effect (not always the case, since they cap in how high they scale), you'd have to roll a 21 or more on the d20 to dispel some of these buffs. When you notice that this boosted CL also boosts the *effect* of most of these spells for free, you'll start weeping. At least Divine Power's base attack increase is your character level, not your caster level. Back on the OP, I'd like to note that the Magic Item Compendium reprinted a huge array of items from both Defenders of the Faith and Libris Mortis (the two sources for Nightsticks), and yet Nightsticks themselves weren't present. Draw from that as you will. * And even AMF isn't too much of a problem for a proper DMM Persist cleric, thanks to Initiate of Mystra and similar. |
