So I was thinking about creating a situation where the party has to aquire a large chunk of money. The only way to do this is through a poker tournament. Of course I have no idea how to do this.

I was thinking bluff, intimidate, and sleight of hand might aid in the game. But I wasnt sure how exactly either. I will also point out that I am running a house rule where characters have a luck score very much like any other ability score, so that may help also.

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

More like bluff and sense motive, plus sleight of hand for characters who aren't adverse to cheating. I guess you could include intimidate, but that seems like a hostile action that could merit an arrest in any lawful society.

You could just do a whole bunch of consecutive bluff and sense motive checks, but I think it would be much more fun if you were able to incorporate a real game of poker in there somewhere, possibly dealing cards out and having the characters declare a normal poker action and one role play action each round. Players could also cheat with sleight of hand, especially if they fail their bluff check :D

Sounds like a lot of fun and I might end up using it one day. My character is a bard, so it could be a fun, fast and easy way to make some gold.

The PC Bard I DM for ended up using a skill called Profession(Gambler) that receives synergy bonuses from bluff and sense motive, and circumstance bonuses from successful slight of hand checks. He could roll (but not take 10) to earn some spare coin whenever he went to town like other professions, but I had him put up a set amount of cash that he would loose if he failed the check.

For your use, you could probably just forgo the static DC and use opposed rolls for the tournament, with some kind of bonus for luck.

you could play a real game of poker with all the cards face up. If your character is going to bluff, announce it, and your roll. Everyone believes you if they succeed on the sense motive. IF you are going to attempt a sleight of hand check to cheat, have everyone roll spot checks, if they fail you succeed.
