| Kinndred03-07-07, 07:53 PM | OK, so can anyone tell me if there is a way to detect if a pc is infected with a disease while it is still incubating?? Where can I find that in the rules?? Also can anyone tell me where to fine the rule on when a poison leaves the system with out magic healing. Basically can you heal ability loss with restoration with out removing the poison. HELP:confused: |
| Kalor1103-07-07, 08:20 PM | OK, let's take your questions one at a time. First, can you detect a disease? While the core rule books are silent on this issue, I've always run a house rule that with a DC 10 Heal check, a healer can determine the relative health of someone, and on a DC 15 Heal check, they can identify the particular disease afflicting the character. There are also many other books with many other spells in them. Somewhere along the line, I saw a spell Detect Disease (I think it was either a cantrip or a 1st level spell on the Sorceror/Wizard spell list). I don't remember which book that was. But you can always research and create the spell yourself (follow the rules for creating spells in the DMG and PHB). Poison is different than disease, because its affects are extremely temporary in nature. If a character contracts a disease, it lasts until they make 2 successful saving throws in a row against that disease (and they take the disease's ability score damage each day until that happens), or until someone uses a Cure Disease spell or spell-like ability on them. Remember that a diseased characer gets one saving throw vs. the disease PER DAY. Poison, on the other hand, lasts for one minute. There's immediate damage that gets done (with a corresponding Fortitude save), and one minute later there's secondary damage (with a separate Fort save) that can affect the character even if they make the first save. But, after they take the secondary damage, I don't think they're considered poisoned any more, because they no longer take poison damage from that point on. Generally, however, I tell the character that they are "feeling ill" until their ability scores are back to normal. Even if they "recover" from the disease, they still heal the ability damage slowly -- and they're not feeling 100% during that time. As for Restoration, the spell will restore lost ability score damage, but will not remove the disease or neutralize the poison. If a cleric casts Restoration on your character immediately upon their being poisoned, your character still needs to make a Fortitude save 1 minute later. |

| Kinndred03-07-07, 09:55 PM | My DM has made the call that you must remove the poison with a Neutralize poison spell before you can repair the ability loss. That really isnt a problem in a higher level campain but we are all 5th level and it is a 4th level spell. Our fighter have a str of 9 at the moment. |

Or once your hit with the poison your not affected anymore Because poison counts as damage, it takes effect every time the individual is exposed to it. So yes, you can be poisoned repeatedly within the span of a few rounds. |
| itwasntme03-07-07, 11:21 PM | Most Poisons/Disease can be healed without reverting to magicol healing read natrual healing to heal ablity damage IT TAKES A LONG TIME but it can happin without reverting to magicol healing yes you can detect disease/poisons without reverting to magicol healing but useoly not at first When ever your character has to make a Saveing Throw your character knows it he dosnt know what but he knows something is happning and can kinda guess Example a Charm effect that faild will alert the character that he made a save DC eather by hearing wispers in his mind but it dosnt effect him So after the first day the effects of the Poison / Disease is shown so now it known that somethings bothering you/effecting you what it is persisly is unknown you can determin if its a poison/disease by heal checks more infomation on the Heal Skill tells you more about this useoly the only time Posin/Disease can hurt you is low levels allso mention by wizard and other such things Posins/Disease can effect you multibol times but has no addition effect after the first time ETA you cant carry more then 1 mummy rot on you becouse well you allready have mummy rot Wizard have stated that But yes you have to make multibol saveing trows each time and can be effected by it however if you Cure 1 you cure them all Example if your hit by the Scorpien and faild 3 times your effected by the 3 but if you cast cure poison (Or w/e its called) once you heal all 3 effects on the character |

Well, unfortunately for you in that situation, rule number 1 is that the DM is always right. However, the rules are on your side, sort of. I generally extrapolate poison effects based on the rules for diseases. The DMG states, regarding disease and healing temporary ability damage, that a character recovers 1 point of ability damage per 8 hours of rest per ability damaged. This rate is constant even while a disease is active (that is, you DO NOT need to recover from the disease before you start healing ability damage). DMG, page 293. Now, the rules for poison don't specifically state the same thing. But, the rules for diseases don't state that the ability score healing only applies to ability damage done by a disease. It says that a character heals 1 ability damage per day of rest, per ability score, period. So, extrapolating from the disease rules, I'd say that your DM is a bit on the harsh side. But always remember that the DM is the referee, and the final say in his or her campaign. And also remember that a potion of Neutralize Poison is only 750 gp, and a potion of Delay Potion is only 300 gp (and that's a much lower level spell). |
