My 14th level ranger took archery as combat style, and, with some additional related feats now has ridiculously high number of attacks and amazingly high bonuses [+21/+21/+15/+10 when taking a full round].

However, the damage per arrow used is still ridiculously low, especially against monsters with damage reduction.

There’s no Power Attack for ranged weapons, but I think there should be. Do you know of any book allowing such a feat? Any ideas or thoughts on this? Any way to increase per arrow damage as a ranger?

FINE AIM [GENERAL]
Your bowshots are more devastating, but at the expense of accuracy.
Prerequisites: Point Blank Shot, Str 13, Dex 13.
Benefits: When making an attack with a ranged weapon, you may choose to substract a number up to your base attack bonus from your attack roll, and add this to damage on a one for one basis. Creatures immune to critical hits are immune to this additional damage.

The name seems a little misleading to me though...it suggests taking really good aim, but that's what you're sacrificing. And why precision based?

how about...this:

Power Draw [GENERAL]
By pulling farther back on your powstring, your bowshots are more devastating, but at the expense of accuracy.
Prerequisites: Point Blank Shot, Str 13, Dex 13.
Benefits: When making an attack with a ranged weapon, you may choose to substract a number up to your base attack bonus from your attack roll, and add this to damage on a one for one basis.

That's a copy of my original pre-edit post. There's a reason I edited it. It didn't make sense. Drawing your bow powerfully involves using a composite bow with a certain factor - drawing a bow more powerfully doesn't have any positive effect, it makes it snap. My version is altered to reflect aiming at more important body parts, which requires taking a penalty to attack rolls in order to deal more damage. Which makes it precision based, and hence crit-immune creatures are immune.

That's not the feat. It's called Ranged Power Attack, it's in CWr or CAd, can't remember right off-hand, works just like normal Power Attack, and has that as a prerequisite feat.

Yeah, I guess you're right.

The name still irks me though...how about these (+flavor?):

Precise Patience (you wait for a weak spot to be revealed, then fire rapidly)
Vital Targeting (you take care to only fire at vulnerable spots)
Quick Aim (you always take a shot when a vulnerable spot is exposed...even if you risk missing the shot)

EDIT:That's not the feat. It's called Ranged Power Attack, it's in CWr or CAd, can't remember right off-hand, works just like normal Power Attack, and has that as a prerequisite feat.

Works for me...I had no idea, since I've only got the SRD and a DMG myself.

There's an official feat? I'd love to hear confirmation on that. If so, I'll be eager to see if they had it make sense.

Edit: the WotC official feats list does not list that feat.

Hm... I was somewhat wrong, it's Power Throw, usable only for thrown weapons. The one I was thinking of is a class feature of Hulking Hurler. Still only useable with thrown weapons.

Ah. With throwing, it makes sense not to be precision damage, ofcourse.

I'd also like to point out that you can already get ridiculous damage with a bow if you try...a week or two ago I was bored and came up with a Ranger/Monk/PsyWar who was pumping out Fell Shot + Manyshot every round for 128+ dmg a round on average. Adding a ranged power attack would be icing on the cake...putting him well over 200 damage if he rolls okay!

I'm playing a game where I'm a Stone Giant (working toward Hulking Hurler) that'll be doing an area attack (at least 15x15 ft) with a huge rock that does (assuming he sacrifices 5 to attack) 5d6 + 64 before adding in magic items.

Note that the preferred means of bypassing materials DR is specialized arrows, and that Archers usually derive much greater benefit from the Bane enhancement on arrows than Meleers do on melee weapons (since the "golf bag" thing actually makes sense, and per-arrow, the enchantments is rather cheap, being divided by 50 and all.) Favored Enemy bonuses should also be bumping up damage significantly.

True, you still won't be doing as much damage per hit as a meleer, but that honestly seems like a fair trade-off for both staying out of melee, and for being much more likely to have the ideal weapon for a given situation.
