Power Shot? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-19-07, 12:14 AM I know there is a Power Attack Feat for melee weapons. Is there a Power Attack Feat for ranged weapons? My player said there is one for a Prestigue Class but there are none for normal Feats. This seems kinda odd to me that you can do it with melee weapons but you can't use it for ranged.

Is there a Feat that allows you to Power Attack for Ranged Weapons?

(Can you Power Attack with thrown weapons, such as axes and hammers? I forget.)

06-19-07, 12:25 AM in Complete Adventurer, there is Power Throw (with the Power Attack prerequisite) which allows you to use your STR bonus instead of your DEX bonus to thrown weapon attacks. there is also Brutal Throw, which is essentially Power Attack for thrown weapons (and has Power Throw as a prerequisite).

You're right, power attack for bows and crossbows doesn't work because the weapon itself is what's providing most of the thrust for the bolt/arrow. It's not like you shove forward when you shoot an arrow.

Buying a bow with a higher STR bonus than yours doesn't work, because you're still limited to your own STR bonus, and you take a -2 to hit.

06-19-07, 12:25 PM I've seen the idea of a feat called 'Called Shot' proposed on these boards more than once. The idea is you take a penalty to hit to do more damage based on targeting your shot. This damage is considered prescision (thus only affects those vulnerable to crits). I imagine the prereq would be Dex 13+ and maybe Point Blank Shot.

Of course, this is only a proposed feat, and it doesn't exist.

The only other problem with it is that you would be only getting a 1 for 1 ratio between attack penalty and damage bonus, unlike the standard 2 to 1 for using a two-handed melee weapon. Power Attack seems to get it's biggest use from feats and classes that further boost this ratio. You'd have to carefully consider whether or not to provide similar boosts for this Called Shot feat, and if so, how would you get them?
