| WhiteRaven81009-24-06, 03:45 AM | Premature Recruit PrerequisiteLevel Adjustment due to race, one Hit Dice Your level adjustment is reduced by one. SpecialThis feat must be taken at first level, during character creation. This feat does nothing to Level Adjustments given by Templates. I'm not really proud of the name but it's the best I could come up with. The genesis behind Premature Recruit is that so many races such as the Catfolk, Hobgoblin, and Gnoll are on the line between balanced and powerful for a first level character and all they truely would need is one alteration to make them compairable with Spellscale, Dwarves, or Darfellan. So I said to myself why not rob them of their first level feat. Please give me a round to cast Protection from Energy: Flame before commenting. Thank you. |
| Jodjod09-25-06, 01:24 AM | I don't know. It seems...off to mitigate level adjustment with a feat, somehow. On the surface it might seem okay to waste a feat to act as a balancing factor but I can't see a flavour justification for it. |
| tarkin09-25-06, 11:36 AM | I can't see a single feat do that. A level is worth a lot more than a feat. |
| katarl09-25-06, 11:58 AM | Since its a 'Premature' recruit, why not add a penalty along with the feat. It may help balance it out, or every munchkin with half giant-dreams is going to take it (powerful build for a feat?). I suggest making age category 'teenage' a prerequisite, and the effect gets removed, along with the feat (choose another) when you reach adult. The stats for teenage (or child) are reduced considerably. |
| WhiteRaven81009-25-06, 05:09 PM | Ignore the name it's flavor does not equal the crunch. It's a working title at best. And to who ever said it your right, a feat is not worth a level. Maybe I'll browse my books for races and specify a few races that can take Premature Recruit to stop said Half-Giant wet dream. |
| Darth Sephiroth09-25-06, 05:13 PM | Declare it a Regional feat, they're normally far better than a normal feat and only takable at first level and you can only have one of them. Beyond that, I would suggest alloing characters with Inherited templates to qualify for it. |

If you're going to try something like this, it'd be good to have 'allowed' list or something of the likes. Sure, hobgoblins may have bonuses that just ever so slightly push them above LA +0 while not really giving a full return for a level - but if the feat just as readily applies to something at the tip-top end of LA +1, that really isn't a help to the problem. |
| Xeviat-DM09-25-06, 06:38 PM | A level should be worth about 5 feats, if the level adjustment was calculated correctly that is. |
| StruckingFuggle09-25-06, 07:10 PM | A level should be worth about 5 feats, if the level adjustment was calculated correctly that is. You're kidding, right? In almost every case I'd lose a level to gain five feats (well, of my choosing). I'd even play a caster with that. With almost no hesitation. Heck, as a wizard, I'd just have sorceror progression. I could even, if so needed, make one feat Practiced Spellcaster. |
| Bob7210-08-06, 09:50 AM | Its a great concept, but you should have some minor penalty associated with it. ex. -2 str until 5th level or something like that |
| Knute03-23-07, 03:04 PM | (I know this is an old thread) For penalty - How bout require that the player lose all ability bonuses at first level. Each level they may choose an ability bonus to regain. ie Great strength but as a Undeveloped Race you haven't got it yet. Knute |
