Ok I have a freind who swears that there is this feat out there somewhere...

Precise casting, allows you to miss one square in an AoE spell.

Be really useful for my latest chara who has a slight leaning towards area nuking... anyone know if this offical and if so what book it is in.

There is the Prestige Class ability "Mastery of Shaping" from the ArchMage.

There might be a feat that does something similar with some heavy limitations, but I can't remember it.

It might use the word "hole" or "immunity" instead of "precise"

Extraordinary Spell Aim from the CV lets exclude one creature with a high Spellcraft check. Sculpt Spell from the CA lets you change areas of effect, including shapeable cubes that can be positioned to avoid squares.
