I seem to remember a system in one of the books that gave the DM the option of letting players buy the training for certain feats. Feats like weapon proficiancy and the various craft feats that could easily be taught by another person could be bought instead of using precious feat slots to obtain them every three levels. Does anyone else remember this variant or am I just crazy and full of wishful thoughts?

I know it's been mentioned in several posts in the past but I can't recall seeing it in a book. I've also seen it in use and the system was ok for a Gold heavy game, personally I think it's an Ok idea for some feats but definetely not all.(excluding the obvious racial ones)

I could have sworn I saw this in an official book somewhere.

I know Unearthed Arcana has a lot of variants in it including taking flaws for additional feats. It's SRD material so you should be able to research it there.

I don't remember reading anything specifically about buying feats with $ but I do remember retraining rules to swap out feats & I think those may have had a cost. So if for instance you had a fighter with Wpn Focus Longsword & found a spiffy magic shortsword you could retrain so you had Wpn. Focus shortsword instead.
