I am trying to build an NPC to act as bodyguard, and because I have too much time on my hands I found the longstaff and I want to center the character around it.

I'm thinking a ranger with the two-weapon fighting style, with fighter levels to taste.

My current feat base is going for the Quickstaff fighting style from Complete Warrior.

At level 5 I've got (leaving out unrelated feats):
Human Ranger 3/Fighter 2

Level 1: Combat Expertise, EWP (Longstaff)
Level 2: Two Weapon Fighting
Level 3: Dodge
Level 4: Weapon Focus (Longstaff)
Level 5: Quickstaff

So at this point I've gotten the feat tree I want, and with a +1 mithral chain shirt, combat expertise set at -2 and good dex the AC is 24 and the character is unflankable.

Can you suggest a way to get a higher AC, or a more effective feat progression? I like the longstaff flavor, but the big push is for a lightly armored fast bodyguard, so other concepts would be good as well.

Two Weapon Defense gives a +1 shield bonus. (Probably not worth it.) Better would be Improved Buckler Defense, which should allow you to gain the shield bonuses of a buckler while twf with the staff.

Interesting.

There is a few eye catchers that could be tactically useful.

Add on Deadly Defense and Defensive Strike.

Deadly Defense gives a +1d6 damage with the light side of the longstaff while TWF and defending. Couple on Defensive Strike (Complete Warrior), for a very interesting counterstrike strategy with this.

What will help boost AC? May I recommend you go the route of Elusive Target? Thats in Complete Warrior.

Definitely consider a target shield (buckler). I'd not spend more feats on defensive measures unless you decide to go the glorious route of Elusive Target. Two Weapon Defense is way too marginal and a waste of a good feat that can be had with a simple shield.

I'd spend that feat on taking advantage of being missed.
