What about special/class abilities? Using a Longstaff (Complete Adventurer) would give accesss to Exotic Weapon Master. Anything else? |
| Kouk04-15-07, 04:03 PM | Uh, Weapon Focus? |
| Darth Krieg04-15-07, 05:09 PM | oh and try and get an energy aura/enchantment on the staff as well, that way your dealing an extra 1d6 of energy (fire, acid, lightning, etc...) damage for each hit. |
| Fabius Maximus04-15-07, 08:29 PM | Take a look in the Dragon Magazine Compendium. There was an issue with pole-arm related feats a while back, and they were reprinted in the Compendium. There is one feat that lets you block arrows with a pole-arm. (Could be that you have to be monk for it to work. I don't quite remember.) |
| Kintara04-15-07, 08:54 PM | If you play a monk, you may flurry with the quarterstaff. Druids can cast Shillelagh and Spikes on a quarterstaff. A Druid with Vow of Poverty makes a pretty good staff fighter. |

The article about polearms was originally in Dragon Issue #331 and you don't have to be a monk to take the mentioned feat. IMHO the polearm article is the best weapon article ever published in dragon magazines; the feats & new polearms seem quite balanced and adds nice flavor to any campaign. |
| Sephiroth Do'Urden04-16-07, 07:55 AM | Dosn't an Ironwood quarterstaff deal 1d8/1d8? I think I read it somewhere... |

| tarkin04-16-07, 02:42 PM | Most often, an Ironwood Quarterstaff couns as a +1 magical Quarterstaff. Damage of 1d6+1 averages the same as 1d8. |
| BW022204-16-07, 03:24 PM | JellyPooga, but is there any other Feats that particularly benefit a Quarterstaff Fighter-type? Two weapon defence is useful as are other TWF type feats. Others have said weapon focus and certainly weapon specialization is a well worth it. However, don't forget that a quarterstaff is also a two-handed weapon. You also have the option of using it as such -- and there is little disadvantage in using it in two hands when say moving more than 5', readying attacks, taking AoOs in rounds where you aren't using TWF, when fighting DR creatures (to get the extra strength vs. their DR), attacking objects with hardness, when fighting higher AC creatures (rather than an extra attack with a -2 on each of your attacks), etc. Thus, power attack and cleave are good feats for a quarterstaff fighter. As a two-handed weapon it also tends to support feats which help maximize a single attack -- say spring attack or whirlwind attack. As others have said, a level of druid for the Shillelagh spell, or monk for the flurry of blows is often worth it. |
