The description seems some what vague. What does it mean by "effectively"? Does that mean it is still possible to do so? Furthermore, can't you "hurl" yourself with flight by performing a dive attack? I think I can resolve using BJ and Fly together in this solution. I'm really trying to get Fly and Battle Jump to work together, so stop me if my interpretation here of the rules is wrong. The Fly spell grants you an alternate movement mode, meaning you can choose between flying and walking as any other creature with 2 movement modes. Battle Jump will work even if you fall from from an elevated area (like a cliff) onto your opponent. So, can you fly to an appropriate height in the air from which to BJ, turn off your flight and switch to your walk/run mode and fall onto your opponent? |

Fly isn't a dismissable spell, so you can't "turn it off". Furthermore, when Fly ends "the subject floats downward 60 feet per round for 1d6 rounds". So any part of Battle Jump that relies on dropping faster than the Fly spell permits just isn't going to work. To figure out this limit, we just need to match falling velocity with the maximum downward Fly speed of 120', or 40'/second. You'll reach that speed when you've dropped for (40'/sec)/(32.2'/sec2) = 1.24 seconds. That represents a distance dropped of 0.5*(32.2'/sec)*(1.24 sec)2 = 24.8'. Battle Jump should work with Fly if you drop 20' or less; it almost works if you drop 25'. BJ flat out fails if you try to drop 30' or more when subject to a Fly spell. |
