Question Regarding "Augment Healing" Feat [Archive] - Wizards Community

My group has recently come across an idea with the Augment Healing feat, combined with the Lesser Restoration spell. Lesser Restoration, as known, cures 1d4 points of ability damage per casting. Lesser Restoration is also a Conjuration [Healing] spell. Augment Healing's exact wording is as follows;

"Add +2 points per spell level to the amount of damage healed by any Conjuration [Healing] spell that you cast.

For example, a 1st-level Cleric with this feat casting cure light wounds would restore 1d8+3 hp. An 8th-level cleric with the Healing domain and this feat casting cure moderate wounds would restore 2d8+13 hp (9 for his caster level, including the +1 caster level bonus from the Healing domain, +4 for the feat). A 13th-level Druid casting heal would restore 144 hp (130 for her caster level + 14 for the feat, since heal is a 7th-level Druid spell)."

With that wording, would Augment Healing be able to cure additional ability damage via a casting of Lesser Restoration?

I never noticed that, but yes, it works. It also allows you to go over the maximum allowed (for instance, Heal as a 5ht level cleric spell, normally caps at 150, but Augment Healing lets you get up to 160).

That makes a couple times I've seen a reference to heal as a 5th level spell. Do a good deed and give me an education on this? Is it some sort of hijacking of the Adept spell list (the only 5th level heal I've ever heard of)? Hate to thread jack, I just feel like I gotta learn something here.

Yes, it works wonderfully. Likewise a paladin caster can cast it as a 1st level spell that's easily pearled back.

Both are decent ways to cure a good amount of ability damage.

Lastly, you can empower an augmented healing spell...

Now I don't have the book with me right now (I"m at work) but I think healing hymn works with them as well.

Edit: I forgot to say it but heal is 5th level on the NPC Adept spell list in the DMG.

No, AH wouldn't recover additional ability damage. It would still recover hp, even though lesser restoration normally doesn't heal hp.

Its similar to AH's interaction with the vigor spells- it doesn't change what the spell does, it just heals some hp when the spell is cast.

Well, the thing about that spell is that Vigor gives Fast Healing, which is its own thing. Lesser Restoration does restore points of damage to ability scores, which is how I figure the wordings would be based on. Simply; Vigor grants an ability; Lesser Restoration restores ability damage.

After looking in the Errata and FAQ, and re-reading the feat and checking what constitutes damage, I believe that it does not affect lesser restoration, aside from some HP healing. Damage is not ability damage, it is different, so yeah. Though I can see a strong argument for the other side, I believe that this side has the best one, and more readily accepted one.

I would agree that Lesser Restoration cast by a caster with the Augmented Healing feat would heal 1d4 ability damage + 4 hit points worth of hit point damage. It would not heal 1d4+4 ability damage. I think that is over reading the feat description, and would make it too powerful.

Whenever some refers to "Damage", it refers to HP damage. It only refers to Ability Damage if it specifically calls it that.
So as Father Dale and dman11235 said, Lesser Restoration would heal d4 ability damage, and 4 points of HP damage.
Lesser Vigor would heal 2 HP, and give Fast Healign 1 for 10+CL rounds.
Remove Blindness/Deafness would cure said condition and heal 6 HP, etc etc.

This is the first time I have ever heard of a healing spell being too powerful.

You've never experienced the joys of the overkill that is Radiant Servant, then? :P

I have never been asked more for a reworking allowance of a prestige class, hehe. This PrClass is insane, not just for healing, but also for its all out benefits with weapon feats, and the use of all shields (which alone, of all other classes i have seen, does not include Tower Shields in exception.)

This bloody thing is an abomination that the Heironeus PrC can't touch. Why would any party cleric ever worship anything other than Pelor? teehee

Because Pelor is a closet Villain and it is actually Vecna who is the holiest of gods. :P
